The same could be said of any society on the planet. There are things that could be done to soften the blow and you can never get a critical mass of people willing to get "on board". Transition was supposed to be the mechanism to gently nudge people to get "on board" ahead of time, and despite Rob Hopkins' continued feel-good blog postings, it's going nowhere.
Yes but not everybody is in such dire straits YET. These countries need to recognize the problem they have and take a full factual look at the options they have including realistic assessments of the outside aid they might be able to get and then take the actions necessary to ensure their survival. In almost every case the one thing that would actuality help would be a dramatic reduction in birth rate to a level that starts decreasing total population immediately.
