There are common denominators in all hyperinflations. Generally government finances reach a point where large budget deficits cannot be financed by taxes or borrowings. The choices come down to austerity (with the government cutting back its spending) or by funding the deficit by creating local currency through the printing press, leading to the inflation tax. This is always a political decision, but the line of least resistance is the printing press. Cutting government expenditures and laying off bureaucratic staff is anathema to most politicians.

Price controls and foreign exchange regulations have been abandoned. Zimbabwe literally joined the real world at the stroke of a pen. Money now flows in and out of the country without restriction. Super market shelves, bare in January, are now bursting with products.

Good news from Zimbabwe. They can't afford to buy diesel or get their trains repaired.. so they have brought back the coal fired steam trains replaced about ten years ago. Apart from tourism/industrial shunting they are the only country in the world actually using them on freight/passanger main lines (China/India have nearly finished with steam as well, but China still has factories making spares)

Zimbabwe is certainly the only country expanding its use of steam, 10 engines to be working by next year, maybe 50 more in storage. They have the world's last steam shed for repairs and maintenance. Unlikely as it seems maybe this could help solve Africa's transport problem, coal is plentiful and new steam trains could be made cheaply in China. Apparently other African nations are interested in this I gleaned this off the net, kind of romantic I thought

Contrary to what all the naysayers were blathering on about being impossible back in 2005 this is an event that actually happened. It also was not restricted to Zimbabwe, Botswana has also resumed using some steam power so they can use cheap local coal instead of imported petroleum.

IMO when oil goes back up this trend in revitalizing local resource based machinery could continue to see a resurgence. While the USA arrogantly proclaims electricity is the only way to go those with less ability to fantasize about reality focus on what works instead of what they wish would work. Even in the USA there is extreme reluctance to electrify freight rail because of the liability caused by our tort system in court.
