Growth

Unread postby Aaron » Mon 05 Sep 2005, 17:58:02

So I took the US Census numbers for population growth, and a per capita US oil consumption of 28 barrels per day...

And I get:

The US needs 192,000 new barels of oil per day forever.

Can this be right? Jeeze...

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

My calculations sez 731.3 new barrels per day per day

1.011 pop growth per year

6.963e9 / 248.709e6 = 27.99 barrel per population per year
= 3891 litres per population per year
= 10.65 litres per population per day

1.000032487 pop growth per day

8.222e9 / 365.25 * 0.000032487 = 731.3 barrel per day per day

28 barrels per day? No way. 20 mpd / 280 million people = 3 gallons per person per day. It's more like 28 barrels per year. Assuming 3 million new people every year (remember most of the growth is through immigration) that's around 200,000 barrels per day increase.

The US might want that but won't get it. After 33 years of arrogant elitist economists scoffing at the limits to growth study, Americans are going to heve to live within limits whether they like it or not.
