I have just come to the conclusion that long distance in a post-peak world will be increasingly difficult, and less reliable. Telephone systems, television stations, cellular networks, and regular AM radio stations may no longer be capable of functioning in times of emergency. Previous examples of the necessity of Hams are September 11th, regional disasters, and the August 2003 east coast blackout. Considering that the 9/11 commission has stated that al-Qaeda "remains extremely interested in conducting chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear attacks" and is "actively striving to attack the United States and inflict mass casualties," I feel that this is a matter of urgency.
I could personally cope with a terrorist attack that might happen, but the threat of a thermonuclear detonation or radiological contamination has gotten me worried. How do I get into the amateur radio broadcasting, where do I get the radio necessary to do this, what frequencies could I broadcast on, and how can I do this as cheaply and reliably as possible? I do not know Morse code, so I am primarily interested in voice communications. Does anyone have any advice regarding this?
