After hearing Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo co-founder Jeremy Grantham’s keynote on Tuesday at the 2018 Morningstar annual conference in Chicago, there is no doubt RIAs in the audience were persuaded to utilize sustainable investing methods. “We only have 30 to 70 good agricultural producing years left” at the rate we are going, he said, adding that the world is losing 1% of collective soil and 1% of arable land a year.
Some other findings he cited:
- Global population has tripled since 1938, but fertility rates are declining. Sperm count has dropped 50% in the developed world. “Two factors may be people are waiting longer to have kids, and all the toxicity in the world,” he said.
- Since 1950, floods happen 15 times more often, wildfires seven times more often and extreme temperature events over 20 times often. Since 1996, droughts happen 10 times more often.
- There has been a significant rise in certain diseases, including diabetes, asthma, autism and MS; in addition, several types of cancers have risen dramatically since 1953, including melanoma, breast and testicular cancer.
The good news is clean energy, specifically solar and wind, will be much cheaper in the next 10 years than even the operating costs of coal and nuclear power. Battery costs will drop as well, making electric cars cheaper to build, run and maintain. The problem, Grantham said, is carbon will continue to increase even as green measures are taken and fossil fuel use drops, and we can only afford a rise of 3 degrees celsius.
Grantham’s own GMO Climate Change Fund is made up of 34.58% clean energy stocks, 5.44% smart grid, 9.30% copper, 20.31% energy efficiency, 23.18% agriculture, 4.93% water and 2.25% cash. He destroyed the argument that portfolios that don’t include gas and oil stocks will have weaker performance as he showed three time periods and how portfolios fared when various sectors were eliminated, and ex oil and gas portfolios had less impact than many other sectors.
“The assumption has been if you divest of oil, returns will be hurt, but that’s not the truth,” he said.

There was a decades long quiet understanding between the CSU and CDU that the former would “do” Bavaria and the CDU the rest. But under Merkel the CDU has drifted so far to the left that the CSU could be tempted to break the agreement and go Bundesweit (federal-wide). In contrast to the populists, I am pro-environmentalism, pro-energy transition, pro-European cooperation (EU or better “Europe of the Fatherlands”), pro-euro, in order to eventually get out of the shadow of ZOG-USA, with Russia being the great enabler to do so. With 700 million Europeans we can intervene in North-America, if things go terribly wrong there (or right, depending on your perspective) and whitey seriously tries to escape from the grip of Washington.

It is very nice to see an American standing up to the board’s bully. I wish more Americans did the same. It is absolutely true that Davy represents the worst that the USA has to offer and he has turned virtually every non American that has visited this board against him and his country at one point or another. I will go swimming in a short while and maybe kayaking, fishing, or rafting later. I do it everyday during the Summer, when I have more free time because I am not growing annual veggies. The perennial food forests don’t require maintenance all the time.
