No Stream: EU gas markets brace for price surge after latest Russia gas cut

European gas buyers already grappling with record-high prices face further pain when the markets open on Monday after Russia said one of its main supply pipelines to Europe would remain shut indefinitely, sparking fears over energy rationing.

Lower gas flows from Russia ahead of and following its February invasion of Ukraine have already pushed up European prices by nearly 400% over the past year, sending electricity costs soaring.

Europe has accused Russia of weaponising energy supplies in what Moscow has called an “economic war” with the West over the fallout from the Ukraine conflict, while Moscow blames Western sanctions and technical issues for supply disruptions.

The Nord Stream pipeline, which runs under the Baltic Sea to Germany, historically supplied around a third of the gas exported from Russia to Europe, but was already running at just 20% of capacity before flows were halted last week for maintenance.

Expectations were high Russia’s state-controlled energy giant Gazprom would restart flows at 20% after the latest stoppage, leading benchmark Dutch TTF gas prices to fall back around 40% from Aug. 26’s record high to close at just over 200 euros per megawatt hour on Friday.

But after Russia scrapped a Saturday deadline for flows to resume, saying it had discovered a fault during maintenance, prices are likely to surge again, analysts said. read more

“On Friday… the market was already pricing in Nord Stream 1 (NS1) flows coming back,” Energy Aspects gas analyst Leon Izbicki said. “We expect a significantly stronger open for the TTF on Monday.”

Sky-high power costs linked to surging gas prices have already forced some energy-hungry industries, including fertiliser and aluminium makers, to scale back production, and led EU governments to pump billions into schemes to help households. read more

The impact of the latest cut would depend on Europe’s ability to attract gas from other sources, Jacob Mandel, senior associate for commodities at Aurora Energy Research, said.

“Supply is hard to come by, and it becomes harder and harder to replace every bit of gas that doesn’t come from Russia,” he said.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday his country had been preparing for a total halt in gas deliveries from Germany.

Germany, Europe’s largest consumer of gas, is at phase two of a three-stage emergency plan to deal with lower supply. A move to stage three would see some gas rationing to industry. read more

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine Europe rapidly launched plans to cut its dependence on Russian fuels, switching to alternative suppliers of gas and other fuels and pushing faster deployment of clean energy supplies. read more

Germany has begun developing liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals to enable it to receive gas from global suppliers and move away from Russian gas imports. read more

“There’s plenty of scope to replace that (Russian) gas with LNG imports for now, but when the weather turns cold and demand starts to pick up in the winter in Europe and Asia, there’s only so much LNG out there that Europe can import,” Mandel said.

Klaus Mueller, president of the Federal Network Agency energy regulator, said in August that even if Germany’s gas stores were 100% full, they would be empty in 2.5 months if Russian gas flows were halted completely.

Europe last week met early a target to fill its gas stocks by 80% by November. EU stocks are currently 81% full, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe data, with Germany’s stores at 85% full.

Izbicki said prices would need to reach an average of 400 euros per MWh between September 2022 and end-October 2023 to encourage enough sellers to send gas to storage for the EU to meet its targets for next year ahead of winter 2023.

Russian gas is still currently flowing to Europe through pipelines via Ukraine, but speculation is now mounting over whether that too could be halted.

“We’re shifting focus to the (gas) … that continues to flow to Europe through Ukraine,” James Huckstepp, EMEA gas analyst at S&P Global Platts, said in a Twitter post. “Only a matter of time…”

Russia does NOT want to break with Europe, says that fuel will be delivered again, after anti-Russian sanctions are lifted.

Difficult to see how the western European elite can resist their own populations, later this year.

Fun to watch the insane West cannibalize itself. What idiot would sanction his supplier of necessities (Oil, gas, fertilizer, etc)? Answer: the idiots that have their heads so far up the dirty, corrupt asshole of Amerika that they have no freedom.

Not to mention that they are now ruled by WEF brainwashed bots. Ruled, not led. How many Europeans voted to be starved and frozen this winter? ‘Democracy’ does not exist there or anywhere in today’s world.

Biden’s, Russia will never trust the EU again. They are all liars along with the rest of the West. They will trade but on Russia’s terms.

Your dream of it joining with Russia is not likely to ever happen, just like your dream of a “renewable” world. When the FFs run out, so will progress. Regression to a much lesser world will ensue.

    Meanwhile, in the real world:
“The soldiers said they lacked the artillery needed to dislodge Russia’s entrenched forces and described a yawning technology gap with their better-equipped adversaries….
We lost five people for every one they did…
Russia’s Orlan drones exposed Ukrainian positions from more than a kilometer above their heads, they said, an altitude that meant they never heard the buzz of the aircraft tracking their movements….
Oleksandr said the Russian artillery fire was relentless. “They were just hitting us all the time,” he said. “If we fire three mortars, they fire 20 in return.”…
Soldiers described ending their shifts and turning on their phones to call or text family members — a decision that immediately drew Russian artillery fire….
Russian soldiers are not allowed to carry mobile phones. Why Ukrainian soldiers are allowed to have then and use those is beyond me. Do they want to commit suicide?…

“Suicide is what European politicians have committed their economies and societies to. Who knew that one needs energy, as cheap as possible, to smelter steel, aluminum and glass?” Obviously the EU ass kissers are too stupid to know anything that does not come out of DC.

The Ukraine war was planned in 2019 by RAND Corp. The idea that the U.S. is innocent is absurd.  See Transcend Media Service on this:

How to Destroy Russia.  2019 Rand Corporation Report:  “Overextending and Unbalancing Russia”

10 Mar 2022 — The strategic plan of the United States against Russia was elaborated three years ago by the Rand Corporation (the manifesto, Rand Corp: how to bring down Russia, May 21, 2019).  The Rand Corporation, headquartered in Washington, DC, is “a global research organization developing solutions to policy challenges”:  it has an army of 1,800 researchers and other specialists recruited from 50 countries, speaking 75 languages, spread across offices and other locations in North America, Europe, Australia, and the Persian Gulf.  Rand’s U.S. personnel live and work in more than 25 countries.

We now find that the RAND Corp. developed and, on 2022 January 25 published, an updated version, a “confidential” (for WHCS, ANSA, Dept. of State, CIA, NSA, DNC) plan to destroy Germany as an economic power and suck all of its technical expertise to the U.S., leaving ordinary Germans (and consequently the rest of Europe) impoverished and doomed.  It is unfortunately available only in a German translation, at -die-usa-planen-die-zerstoerung-der-deutschen-wirtschaft/.

The expanded and “improved” RAND strategy, titled “Weakening Germany, Strengthening the U.S.” — now “unofficially” adopted by the U.S. orchestrators of the Ukraine proxy war — is to use that conflict to deprive Germany of fossil fuel from Russia and thereby to destroy its heavy industry completely.  RAND needs the German Green Party, a herd of insane Climate zealots, to help bring about this suicide.  The fanatics will thereby forever prevent any union of German technology with Russia natural resources and keep America as the world’s hegemon.  It is absolutely necessary to execute this plan, because, as the first sentence of the document puts it (my translation), “The current state of the U.S economy does not indicate that it can function without financial and material support from abroad.”

In other words, RAND experts admit “confidentially” that the U.S. is moribund.  There is no way the United States can exist much longer in the form its citizens have been used to.  The end is nigh, and must be prevented by beggaring the rest of the world.

This is the ultimate reason why the Democrat dictators (stealthily assisted by Republicans) have been promoting insanity in law and culture in recent years.  Peak Oil is not only real;  it is also the reason why the nation is now becoming suicidal with the importation of the entire Third World, with deadly narcotics, with the release from prison of vicious criminals (especially dark-skinned ones), and countless other psychopathies.

The RANDies have devised a plan to bring down the rest of Western Civilization before the “indispensable nation” itself dies.

Theedrich, this is not the first time you got a stiffy over a RAND report. Reports like this is what RAND does. Most of them go nowhere. Thousands and thousands of reports for decades. Go look at their archive and your head would pop off due to a massive conspiracy hardon. The branches of the US military have also been putting out these types of ‘what if’ & ‘we need to’ reports galore for decades. You live in an open society so you get access to 99%?? of them. Some can’t be opened until a future date (the guilty die off). So many reports & white papers you could not read them in a lifetime. Did you not know that your tax dollars pay lackeys to write endless papers?

Just think of how you and your retard conspiracy fuck buddies can take any report or plan and turn it into a global conspiracy that is out to get American white boys’re so damn special Thee.

Y’all did it with the great reset. I’ll wager 99% of you great reset hysterical children never actually read the great reset.
    Copy-N-paste hysterics.

Everything that does not align with right-wing billionaires and wealthy conservatives business interests just happens to be a perfect match for the latest conspiracy. It just happened with the NOT grass roots anti-vaxxing anti-masking. They did not like it so they got their think tanks on it and began funding loud fuck-tard know, the usual. The rich ones are just as predictable as the trailer trash and all in between.

    The ungreat replacement

Workers in the West have indeed been repressed – but not by immigrants. The policies of their own governments are to blame

The narrative of white genocide is completely, demonstrably wrong

Enjoy reading 75 years of RAND’s scheming and plotting (all for the good of the American people of course)

    Published Research

We disseminate the results of our work as broadly as possible to benefit the public good. Tens of thousands of RAND publications are available as free downloads, dating back to 1946.

Painting products from the US bureacracy as inconsequential past times, eh?

Victoria Nuland is micromanaging day-to-day “Ukrainian affairs” since 2014. This “Kiev idea” to attack Donbas, wasn’t Kiev’s at all, but a clear US successful attempt to force Russia into war.

The trouble for the US is: China-2022 is not Italy-1942.

And since 2004 at the latest, the whole world knows that the nimbus of invincibility around the US head, has vanished into thin air.

  15. FamousDrScanlon on Thu, 8th Sep 2022 4:05 pm

I’m not sure what you are getting at clog.

Potty mouth Vicky & the rest of the US state dept don’t matter since the US made one of history’s biggest geopolitico fuck ups by pushing Russia into the arms of China when they should have spent their efforts driving a wedge between them. You know, like how they drive wedges between the plebs sub tribes in the home nation.

Yabut divide them over what? Who cares. Find some minor difference in their religious & political beliefs and blow it totally out of proportion. In addition, make a bunch of shit up that will enrage them, then blame everyone for everything.

I doubt China and Russia will become BFF, but they will continue to cooperate, make new partners & friends with other nations via new economic organizations and agreements that the US is not invited to.

  16. makati1 on Thu, 8th Sep 2022 4:45 pm

Interesting how “conspiracy theories” are usually found to be true once the brainwashing propaganda is exposed by time or events.

Rand is a propaganda arm of the US, but they do advise and many government drones cause a lot of shit because of that “advice”.

It is a rare mind that can see thru the bullshit spewed 24/7/365 in the West and act on it to save themselves.

After the price of electricity rose to about 500 ø/kwh here in Denmark the danish government graciously and generously lowered the tax on it with a whopping 4 øre and with the prospect of another 4 øre for the year 2023… Or a combined savings of about 1.5 % after a rise of 150%….

This surely saves everyone with electric cars and electricaly heating…..

It probably cost the taxpayers more for the bureaucrats to sit on their fat asses and calculate and plan this great rescue….

Failure? I would think that they have “modernized” better than the US or EU. They are an “independent” country, not a slave to the elite money grubbers in the West.

They have all they need to have a good life for many decades. The West wants those resources to the point of war, but it (the war) will only take down what is left of the West.

Maybe you didn’t notice, but Russia makes the rocket engines that the US uses for its ICBMs, etc.? They also make the best antimissile system in the world (S400), not to mention hypersonic missiles in many forms that actually work. The West has nothing close at any price.
