Romania’s Government Collapses

Romania’s Government Collapses thumbnail

Romania’s prime minister has been toppled after the parliament passed a vote of no confidence tabled by his party.

Barely six months after winning elections, Sorin Grindeanu was ousted by almost all the MPs in his leftwing Social Democratic party (PSD) with the backing of their junior coalition partners, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE).

The motion of no confidence, which accused Grindeanu of delays in carrying out planned economic and social reforms in Europe’s poorest country, passed by 241 votes to seven, more than the 233 required.

Despite the resignation of 25 of the 26 ministers in his cabinet, Grindeanu, who was appointed prime minister after the PSD won 46% of the vote in December’s elections, had refused to step down when his party withdrew its support last week.

He instead accused the PSD’s powerful leader, Liviu Dragnea – who is barred from running for office because of a 2016 vote-rigging conviction but continues to dominate the party – of trying to “concentrate all the power” in his hands.

“This is a sad day for us. The premier did not perform,” Dragnea told MPs before the vote on Wednesday. “It didn’t go badly, it went quite well, but that’s not enough.”

He accused Grindeanu of “clinging on … in a highly illegitimate way”.

Grindeanu said he would remain in office until a new government was installed, adding that Dragnea’s influence would mean whoever replaced him as prime minister “has no chance of exercising the role”.

It was nonetheless important, Grindeanu said, “that we get out of this blockage and send a message to investors and governments around the world that Romania remains a stable and predictable environment”.

The two ruling coalition parties are expected to suggest a new prime minister to the centre-right president, Klaus Iohannis, who had previously urged the government to resolve the crisis as quickly as possible.

Talks with the president are scheduled for Monday, and Iohannis has the right to refuse a candidate. Once appointed, the new premier will have 10 days to win a vote of confidence in parliament for his cabinet and programme.

The crisis is the second to hit the PSD since it returned to power in the December poll. In February, the largest protests in Romania since the fall of communism forced the government to drop plans to water down anti-corruption laws.

The party was forced out of power in 2015 after mass protests over a deadly Bucharest nightclub fire that killed 64 people and was widely blamed on corrupt officials ignoring safety regulations.

Although its economy is growing fast at about 5.6%, the International Monetary Fund and the European commission have warned that Romania remained in urgent need of further far-reaching reform.

Analysts said Grindeanu’s departure could be linked to his alleged failure to push through the controversial anti-corruption laws – which may have allowed Dragnea to run for office despite his conviction.

“Liviu Dragnea only wants one thing – amendments to the anti-corruption laws” that prevent him from becoming premier, a former PSD member, Alin Teodorescu, told Agence France-Presse.

Why Brexit? Romanians etc. When the EU arrogantly extended schengen to Romania, Lithuania etc they unleashed a crime wave in western Europe that began to turn people sour on the EU, the final straw was the abuse of the borderless zone by people smugglers and finally Germany to invite millions of Asians into Europe without the consent of the people and the stupid and greedy Germans thanked Merkel for her arrogance by voting for her. How stupid the Germans are, to be more scared of losing the currency manipulating Euro than challenge the arrogance of their leaders. When EU so called leaders began making noises of an EU army Brexit was more likely than ever. With Islamist attacks a daily reality in Europe, Macron’s France in a permanent state of emergency, nothing is normal anymore.

Joe, Romania wanted to be part of Schengen, but was never allowed to. It is part of EU however, so traveling in and out of it is not a problem, but you still have a border and need to show some ID. Not that this has ever stopped any smugglers… 😉

Romania is a net importer of oil, 104,000 bls per day. Plays hell with the economy as well as the polical system.

Romanian oil fields were among Hitler’s prime allies 76 years ago.
How long before Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia can be safely ignored?

Who were the Axis powers during World War II?
The three principal partners in the Axis alliance were Germany, Italy, and Japan. Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Thailand also signed the Tri-Partite Pact as member states.

Re: #SAUDI ARABIA TARGETING $60/BBL CRUDE #OIL FOR ARAMCO IPO: WSJ. #OOTT

It is not so difficult to achieve, and everyone knows it, they are just stubborn and unwilling to sacrifice a small to get a large.
They cut production by 1.2mm since January 1 while US, Nigeria and Libya increased production by the same amount.
Russia and gangs were very slow to participate.
In addition they didn’t cut exports at all so they just depleted their own SPRs.
In other words the world’s demand growth was absorbing the US/Nigeria/Libya production increase. That’s why we see huge inventory builds in Q1 and relatively small draws in Q2. Everything was according to seasonality, not real cuts.

Bottom line: If Saudi/OPEC are serious, make double cuts, or add 1.2mm bpd more cuts to compensate for US/Nigeria/Libya. All three are are at approximately peak levels this year so there’s no risk for somebody to take share. The easy barrels are already added. Further icnrease required more infrastructure and as a result – even higher than $60 oil prices. Sure they will add more in 2018, perhaps 600K bpd, but demand will outpace those extra by 100%.
Also bring Russia and gang on board to add 600K bpd more.

This is very simple – you need to curt sufficiently to account for a catch up in countries with temporarily production fall like Nigeria/Libya/Iran. Venezuela is not counted at this point.

And cutting exports by same volumes is required to produce real cuts as opposed to fake cuts. Then inventories would fall to 5-year average by December 31 guaranteeing $60 oil.

It is not so difficult, they cut much deeper – by 3-4mm bpd in previous cycles.
They can restore production back in April 2018 as there won’t be needs to drain inventories, just maintain the balance.

    Why Brexit? Romanians etc.
    >> So you are saying its not about regaining sovereignty but about foreigers ?

When the EU arrogantly extended schengen to Romania, Lithuania etc
    >> Why Arrogant ?

they unleashed a crime wave in western Europe
    >> Obviously you can link to Govt. Stats that back this up, its not man in the pub junk science.

that began to turn people sour on the EU, the final straw was the abuse of the borderless zone by people smugglers
    >> I am confused, so people smugglers only smuggle where there are no borders, also the UK has borders, and the UK is the only country in the EU to leave, in fact EU approval has risen across Europe, could you explain this objectively ?

and finally Germany to invite millions of Asians into Europe without the consent of the people and the stupid and greedy Germans thanked Merkel for her arrogance by voting for her.
    >> Millions, again you can back this up some how, also how many entered the UK, so whats it got to do with you. Interesting you said Asians presumably you would be happy with Africans, like Pik Botha ?

How stupid the Germans are, to be more scared of losing the currency manipulating Euro than challenge the arrogance of their leaders.
    >> I am confused, who is manipulating the Euro, presumably there are some trading arrangements I am not aware of, could you enlighten me ?

    When EU so called leaders
    >> presumably you think the EU leaders are not leadersn then ?

began making noises of an EU army Brexit was more likely than ever.
    >> What is wrong with an EU army, you have to say that first this is the WWW world wide, not the serbiton web, not everyone knows

With Islamist attacks a daily reality in Europe,
    >> Daily, I think you should have used a more subjective term like frequently, even then once a month in a state (EU) of 500 million people is not frequent, I suspect more people are killed by donkey attack than terrorists

Macron’s France in a permanent state of emergency, nothing is normal anymore
    >> If France is in a permanent state of emergency, then surely the word permanent implies this is actually the new norm.

In summary, fantastic Rant 2.5 out of 10, must do better, have another go

The Ploiesti oil fields in Romania were defended with 10 concentric rings of Romanian and German light, medium, and heavy flak AA guns, radar, along with three grupen of Focke-Wulf 190 fighter aircraft. Further, Romanian intelligence broke American communication codes. The defenders knew every time the American’s were coming.

The American B-24’s were confronted the most heavily protected facility in Romania. Surrounded by hundreds of anti-aircraft emplacements, heavy-caliber machine guns and defending aircraft, Ploiesti’s defenses included a specially designed flak train made up of freight cars whose sides could drop revealing anti-aircraft artillery that spewed death from its guns as the train raced in tandem with attacking planes.

In one 1944 raid, fifty-three American aircraft were lost and 530 crew members were killed or ended up in a German POW camp. Later surveillance flights revealed that approximately forty-two percent of Ploesti’s refining capacity had been destroyed. However, it took only a few days for the Romanians/Germans to bring the complex back to its previous fuel output.
