Solar Overtakes Gas, Wind as Source of New US Power

Despite tariffs that President Trump imposed on imported panels, the U.S. installed more solar energy than any other source of electricity in the first quarter.

Developers installed 2.5 gigawatts of solar in the first quarter, up 13 percent from a year earlier, according to a report Tuesday from the Solar Energy Industries Association and GTM Research. That accounted for 55 percent of all new generation, with solar panels beating new wind and natural gas turbines for a second straight quarter.

Solar Slump

U.S. installations are expected to be flat in 2018 as tariffs and tax reform drive up costs

Source: Solar Energy Industries Association and GTM Research

Note: 2018 figures are forecast

The growth came even as tariffs on imported panels threatened to increase costs for developers. Giant fields of solar panels led the growth as community solar projects owned by homeowners and businesses took off. Total installations this year are expected to be 10.8 gigawatts, or about the same as last year, according to GTM. By 2023, annual installations should reach more than 14 gigawatts.

“Solar has become a common-sense option for much of the U.S., and is too strong to be set back for long, even in light of the tariffs,” SEIA Chief Executive Officer Abigail Ross Hopper said in a statement.

Homophobic Davy “Come on Juan, not very convincing. Who cares about your sock’s opinion anyway. He is just another loser personality you are living.”

I guess it’s true what they say about liars having trouble believing other people. Nobody is trying to convince you, exceptionalist! Why should I care what your filthy mind thinks? Your thoughts are your problem, moron, not mine.

The bigger they come the harder they will fall..If solar couldn’t stay in business in sunny Spain..It likely won’t survive anywhere else..And there is too much air pollution which is blocking solar rays..You dumb dutch moron.

“What is “huge”? Countries often have strategic oil reserves to the tune of 6 months or more. It doesn’t make a difference if the oil is replaced with renewable produced NH3, methanol, whatever.”

It makes a huge difference. Oil is something that is practically gifted to us; all we need do is pump it out of the ground. It is often stored in natural underground features thanks to its high viscosity, and has an energy density of 36GJ per cubic metre. So even storage is dirt cheap.

The other things you discuss are manufactured industrial chemicals, which in this context, are presumably used to chemically store excess electrical energy for later use. Very expensive compared to oil and quite an inefficient way of storing energy.

As another example, consider storing power in a hydroelectric dam, with a head height of 2km. One cubic metre of water will store 20MJ of potential energy. That is over three orders of magnitude lower energy density than oil, and you needed to generate electric power to pump it up there in the first place.

My own pet idea involved storing power as heat in sand insulated silos full of hot rocks. Energy density would be on the order of 1-2GJ/m3, still an order of magnitude lower than oil and storage efficiency is only 50% in electrical terms and no more than 70% in exergy terms.

Careful combinations of technologies and redesign of infrastructure allow us to minimise some costs, at the expense of greater complexity and central planning.

Dilemmas like this explain why intermittent renewable energy systems developed so far are basically tag ons to fossil fuel power systems. If you already have a gas turbine powerplant, then using wind and solar power to generate 30% of electricity involves only modest additional costs, because the costs of the converters can largely be offset against the cost of fuel. It will still be more expensive overall, but not disproportionately so. This is how Denmark manages to generate up to a third of its power using intermittent wind power without driving itself to bankruptcy.

“For me cost is only one aspect, safety, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, suitability for the lesser technological gods in the third world, everything, in my view, points towards renewables.”

Different solutions will fit different places. There is no universal solution that will suit every part of the world.

“Until proven to the contrary, I assume the Fraunhofer institute did its homework, when it developed a model of society, dynamically optimized the model and came to the conclusion that a renewable energy system will be operational at similar cost as our current fossil one.”

Have you read their work cover to cover and dissected their assumptions? It would be a mistake to hold this work in revenance just because it happens to be associated with the ‘Fraunhofer institute’. It is a study produced by a bunch of analysts. It is only as good as the assumptions that it rests upon. It has been some time since I read the study. But two things do stand out from memory. (1) The proposed energy system remains quite dependant on consumption of natural gas. (2) The authors make assumptions on rapid growth of energy efficiency and declining energy intensity. This is highly dubious for an economy in which manufacturing plays such a significant role. But you should draw your own conclusions.

“Nuclear energy is fundamentally unacceptable, regardless of cost.”

That is an ethical decision, not a practical one. And one that I doubt is very justifiable. If nuclear weapons are the concern, then nuclear power has little to do with it. Isreal, Iran, Pakistan and North Korea, are all nuclear weapons states. None of them have developed significant nuclear power industries. On the other hand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Canada, Germany, Spain and Sweden, are all substantially dependant on nuclear power. None of them are nuclear weapons states. In the US, the civil and military programmes used seperarate facilities and different technology. Countries that want nuclear weapons do not need power reactors to do it and they are of little value to a weapons programme.

As far as accidents are concerned, the effects of even a major nuclear accident are about the same as air pollution so far as human health is concerned. The difference is you need to have a nuclear accident before you get those consequences; as things stand we breath air pollution every day.

What are the ethical considerations of knowingly condeming future generations to a poorer future, when better options are available, but you happen not to like them for emotional reasons?

Antius, the delusional Davy started it about five years ago. Since there is no real moderation here, his arrogant, immature, brainwashed bullshit has polluted the site ever since. Some of us want to post intelligent, informed comments for discussion and answer intelligent, informed rebuttals but he destroys that possibility. Anything he disagrees with has to be putdown and ridiculed. He is obviously either totally brainwashed or insane. You decide.

This happened to juan 3 years ago, if you remember then he went into a depression and was gone. You did not mention that did you grehggie juan? Why because you like this shit. grehgie, “our choice” stupid and I told you I would ignore you if you ignored me and I would even look the other way when you stalk, prick, and attack others. I have offered this to you numerous times but you refuse. You refuse because you like this shit. You rarely comment on topic it is all about the pricking. The offer remains as it does with juan. This is between you and I so leave the others out of it. 3rd world and I can make our own deal. I told 3rd world long ago all he had to do was moderate a little from his anti-Americanism but he has no interest so now he gets moderated daily.

Shut up 3rd world, way back in the early days we all got along until you decided to interject your emotional hatred of the US with extremism and excessive commenting. You have drug this board into the gutter. All you have to do is show some respect but that means moderating and you won’t do that. I really thing this forum is beyond help now that you guys have formed an attack group. There is no way to negotiate with people who think they have a super majority to drive the conversations.
