Inflation Fear – US Food Prices Are Up 19% In 2014 thumbnail

We are sure the weather is to blame but what happens when pent-up demand (from a frosty east coast emerging from its hibernation) bumps up against a drought-stricken west coast unable to plant to meet that demand? The spot price (not futures speculation-driven) of US Foodstuffs is the best performing asset in 2014 – up a staggering 19%

Maybe all those fat yanks will lose some weight. What a pathetic lot.

  2. ghung on Wed, 26th Mar 2014 10:00 pm

….and what a pathetically useless comment, Jimmy Boy. Get back to us when you have something intelligent to say.

Err, ghung, jimmy has a point. Admittedly sweeping generalisations aside America is the fattest nation on earth. Its also the most anorexic nation too. So we should say “Maybe the majority of those mentally retarded yanks” 🙂
    Far more accurate.
Of which ghung I am betting your one of those clever yanks which built America. Pity your dying out.

This is going to be the headlines every year for the foreseeable future. Americans will go back to spending a significant percentage of their incomes on food and soon join the 3rd world in more ways than one.

  5. noobtube on Thu, 27th Mar 2014 1:43 am

    1st world – United States/Western Europe/Australia/Canada
    2nd world – Russia/Soviet Union
    3rd world – Everybody else

At least that’s the way it used to be.

Now, 3rd world means anyone who cannot afford a car.

Americans are big fat stupid pigs. I know, they are all around when you go to the store. Also they are very very mean. If there is oil under your feet, they will kill you to get it. And they don’t recycle trash cause they wanna wreck the planet and waste the resources. They are also entitlement mentality, think they are rich when they soon to be broke. Think they put a man on the moon, but that was their dead grandpappy. Questions?

Norm, send me your picture and tell me your life story and let us see the “Example” of the world class individual you, Noob, mr.T, and JimmyJoe are. BTW send a picture of yourselves without cloths so you can’t hide that beauty so all the girls can admire how endowed you are. Then we will start a twitter account and Facebook page and market your bodies and intelligence. Because when I read post like above I think to myself these people are Genius and must have high IQ’s.

I think Norm paints a very accurate, if a bit crude, picture of Americans. 1969 was an achievement of the Great Generation, and nothing of equal status has happened since. Nothing. All of the tech of today came from the moon race or military pre-moon race. All we are doing today is adding unnecessary complications to old ideas.

Man that is one misleading chart – not that anyone cares, you all look to be too busy calling each other fat and stupid to pay attention. LOL

The index is high mostly due to dairy and beef demand on top of the drought 2 years ago that culled herds. But it is still below 2011 when the value was around 500

Simonr- My 10 year old daughter could debate at this level, come on guys get it together.
That aside no … your fat

Yea, Simonr you ever look at the rest of the world lately. Not a picture of health and happiness. Yea, I admit Americans are fat and growing stupid by the day “BUT” I see no other shining example in the rest of the world. In fact I see nothing but crybabies and whiners across the globe. Everyone blaming everyone in their high and might opinions. I again might add, opinions no one can live up to. I imagine simonr you are a tad over weight or something because I doubt you are a vision of perfection for the world to dwell on. It is easy to claim this discussion is at your daughter level because it is. People labeling people are like children.

Pops, and notice how they base the increase on the December low!

I will also say these statistics are manipulated and distorted. The real story is far worse in the real world because real incomes have nose-dived. There are so many other critical items for our “modern man” existence like driving, healthcare, and education that are sucking discretionary income out of us and making our ability to buy food that much worse.

  13. paulo1 on Thu, 27th Mar 2014 1:16 pm

Geez you guys. Come on. People are people pretty much the world over. When I think of Americans I think of my sister and her fine family, no better or worse than any of us. I think of my relatives in Minnesota, damn fine people ‘making it’ for a couple of hundred years and who would give you the shirt of their back.

Don’t confuse the American people with the American Elite and/or political class. They #!ck their own people over more than the rest of us.

    Davy

I am not really interested in the body shape of a particular nation, and anyone who attempts to generalise on a nation that produced the gugenheim and ‘beavis and butthead’ has not really engaged their brain.

As I sit here having a sandwich I was confused why the normal level of debate had descended into the playground

Myself I am an image of physical perfection.

  15. Pops on Thu, 27th Mar 2014 1:37 pm

Davy, one upside is that the real price of real food is “only” going to rise a couple of percent. That’s because the prices shown in the chart are for commodities; the amount the grower receives, which is only 10% or so of the price we actually pay. The rest is the cost of transport, pre-processing, pre-digesting and pre-packaging.

  16. Davey on Thu, 27th Mar 2014 1:53 pm

    Pops agreed
Simone agreed what great learning material for the kids “Beavis and Butthead”. Cannot argue with that critisim!!

Being fat is good — if there is a famine coming.

  18. bobinget on Thu, 27th Mar 2014 4:18 pm

Nicaragua is the second poorest nation in the hemisphere but doubtless the fattest. We see this too among North American poor. Food, food larded down with sugar, saturated fats gives a person immediate
confort and distraction from an otherwise uncertain,
    stressful existence.

  19. GregT on Thu, 27th Mar 2014 5:38 pm

“Being fat is good — if there is a famine coming.”

Nothing quite like living on stored fat reserves. Very healthy.

To all of the finger pointers, laugh it up, food insecurity is coming to a grocery store near YOU, soon enough.

  20. RICHARD RALPH ROEHL on Thu, 27th Mar 2014 5:44 pm

Scarcity of food… or too high prices for food… is THE NUMBER ONE DRIVER for massive civil unrest seeding McVeigh franchises and guerrilla warfare for revolution and civil war.

‘Britain’s Weight Crisis Almost Hits U.S. Proportions’

“A shocking report landed on my desk this week, concerning the obesity epidemic gripping Britain. The Brits, it argues, are the fattest people in Europe: a race afflicted by gluttony, corpulence, and the attendant miseries of ill-health, early death, and national embarrassment. “It has been conjectured by some that for every one fat person in France or Spain, there are an hundred [sic] in England,” reads the report. It makes for rather glum reading—not least because it was printed in 1816.”

When I worked on the offshore rigs (BP 40’s) off of Scotland for Halliburton 1979-1980, the prejudice against americans was everywhere. I venture by reading some of the early posts in this thread nothing has changed. They moaned over losing the colonies and whined about losing their best looking girls during WWII to americans with more money. Ha ha!
