Energy Shock: How Peak Oil Will Change Your Life

Oil, Cheap Oil has defined us, our economy, our nations, and our way of life. Everything centers around Oil! Oil is even required to manufacture and install alternative energy. The U.S. alone has a fleet of about 210 million automobiles and light trucks. Because of cheap oil, more than half of the American population lives in the suburbs.

Not a bad video…rather basic info. But: “How Peak Oil Will Change Your Life”. The same silly view that PO will change lives IN THE FUTURE. It’s as if some folks can’t see the connection between oil production and its huge negative impact the lives of 100’s of millions of people. Again the focus of the date of PO and not the POD.

Nice little video on peak oil but it’s a little dated…2011 I believe. Although I believe 2015 will be the year of peak, it’s more important to understand the POD as Rock has suggested. Before, we believed that demand destruction would come about by high prices and now we assume prices will keep on falling which brings up a good question, if the price of oil falls and almost everyone can afford it, hoe will demand destruction occur…rationing?

“if the price of oil falls and almost everyone can afford it,” Really? I think I need a refresher course in economics. Taking the U.S. as an example, 93 million people are not included in the labor force currently, wages for the average worker have declined to levels of 15 years ago, the only increase in “wealth” has been to the top 0.1 per cent. If the average U.S. resident has a shrinking income, less disposable income, and 43 million are on food stamps, etc. I think you will be able to tell how demand destruction will occur. Check factory utilization shipping internationally and domestic sales of most goods.

Penury – “If the average U.S. resident has a shrinking income, less disposable income, and 43 million are on food stamps, etc. I think you will be able to tell how demand destruction will occur.” A valid point for sure. But OTOH if the folks at the bottom of the economic pyramid in the US weren’t buying much petroleum products already (even at the lower prices) then there won’t be much demand destruction on their end when prices increases. But even with that mass of folks not buying there are still many tens of millions buying before, now and in the future. That’s where the demand destruction will kick in. But difficult to judge to what degree other then what we’ve seen the last 10 years according to the EIA: “In 2014, about 137 billion gallons of gasoline were consumed in the United States, a daily average of about 375 million gallons. This was about 4% less than the record high of about 142 billion gallons consumed in 2007.”

So despite high oil prices and recessions there was only a 4% swing in consumption. And now we’re seeing gasoline prices much lower than 12 months ago and the EIA is projecting 2015 gasoline consumption to be 380 million gallons per day. That would be 139 billion gallons for 2015: just 2% less than the 2007 and 1.5% more than the recent low in 2014. Thus far between short term oil prices of $145/bbl and $45/bbl overall we’ve seen very little change in gasoline consumption. Which doesn’t promise the same low volatility in the future as we continue to stumble down the PO path. It just indicates that in the US with respect to motor fuels the “haves” still have a good bit so far and the “have-nots” continue to not have very much.

Perfect title: Energy Shock! If you want to know what energy shock looks like, then just open your eyes and look around. The shock waves spreading out from the oil patch are destroying economies, putting people out of work, shutting down manufacturing, ravaging the landscape, generating deadly conflict and causing epic social degeneration and chaos around the world. To counteract the giant shock waves of energy depletion, those of us with open eyes can see the sustained counter-shock waves of propaganda generated by corporations and their political lackeys, the exponentially expanding debt, the lies and deceit from formerly trusted institutions — basically whatever it takes to deny that the oil patch shock waves are rattling our modern high tech civilization to the core and to postpone that day when “the core” is shattered to dust. It is just a matter of time, just a matter of WHICH shock wave will be the one that finally shatters the foundation upon which human civilization has been built. When that shock wave hits, it is going to be a real doozy.

I think that the majority of us agree that the situation is not the same as reported. As someone once said ‘Who you going to believe MSM and TPTB or your own lying eyes?

Is The Free Market a Hoax?

“This got me thinking about the issue of subsidies in general. See, I happen to know that it’s not only the Concorde–the entire commercial airline industry has been unprofitable. When you average out all the ups-and-downs of the commercial air travel industry and subtract the bailouts and giveaways, air travel itself has never made a profit in the entire history of the industry! It turns out that in the 30 years since the airline industry was deregulated in 1978, it has lost nearly $60 billion on U.S. operations. Domestic passenger airline operations lost $10 billion from 1979 to 1989, made profits of $5 billion in the 1990s and lost $54 billion from 2000 to 2009. A similar case is true for just about any means of commercial passenger transportation (bus, rail, etc.)

This caused me to wonder if this were really true. Will any nonsubsidized entity cease to exist beyond subsidies? If so, we’re in a heap of trouble because, try as I might, I could not think of a single major industry that is not subsidized!”

The people who made this video never saw the oil glut coming

    @hello

You are confusing Disneyland with the planet. Just because Disneyland is crowded doesn’t mean the whole planet is. I just spent a week rafting on the chitina river here in Alaska and never saw another party

Inhale much smoke from your burning state planty? 2 million acres already and it’s only the beginning of summer. WOW.

  14. Apneaman on Fri, 3rd Jul 2015 9:10 pm

Planty did you see Sarah Palin out in the bush hunting?

  15. Jimmy on Fri, 3rd Jul 2015 9:16 pm

There goes Plant with his oil glut BS every time somebody mentions Peak Oil. He doesn’t seem to understand that a glut and a peak are not mutually exclusive events. What a fucking retard!

Hey Plant just so you know we are peaking. It’s got nothing to do with whether or not there is also a glut. Fuck are you stupid.

  16. Richard Ralph Roehl on Fri, 3rd Jul 2015 9:29 pm

Sarahhh Palin is not in the bush. She is the ‘bush’… and when she hunts, she uses a fossil fuel helicopter and toxic lead bullets to kill endangered animals suffering Fukushima cancer sores.

  17. Northwest Resident on Sat, 4th Jul 2015 12:50 am

Plant — Actually, I’m every bit as familiar with what the people who made this video are thinking as you are.

In fact, they DID see The Glut coming but realized long ago that The Glut would be nothing more than one of many effects of advanced oil depletion and a clear signal that the end of the age of oil was rapidly approaching.

They also accurately predicted that there would be lunatics and crackpots who would make their shit stain mark on history by blaming The Glut for everything going wrong with the oil industry.

But they chose not to waste any time trying to show reasonable people how totally insignificant The Glut would be in comparison to other future events because they knew that smart people everywhere would simply ignore the morons who daily spout “The Glut” over and over and see them as the buffoons that they are.

    No more WARS for OIL…….

It is time to end the OIL monopoly on transportation fuels……

    Diversify…diversify…diversify…..

Bring on the electric, flex-fuel, biodiesel, CNG, LNG and hydrogen fueled vehicles.

It is time to transition to safer, cleaner and more sustainable alternative energy sources.

Wind, solar, wave energy, geothermal and second generation biofuels made from cellulose and waste are the future.

  19. Kenz300 on Sat, 4th Jul 2015 8:37 am

The world adds 80 million more people to feed, clothe, house and provide energy and water for every year. Endless population growth is not sustainable.

How many fish can you put in a fish tank before a disaster occurs?

The worlds biggest environmental problem is OVER POPULATION.
