$20 Billion Settlement in BP Oil Spill

$20 Billion Settlement in BP Oil Spill thumbnail

A federal judge in New Orleans granted final approval Monday to an estimated $20 billion settlement, resolving years of litigation over the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The settlement, first announced in July, includes $5.5 billion in civil Clean Water Act penalties and billions more to cover environmental damage and other claims by the five Gulf states and local governments. The money is to be paid out over a 16-year period.

The judge, Carl Barbier, set the stage for the settlement with an earlier ruling that BP had been “grossly negligent” in the offshore rig explosion that killed 11 workers and caused a 134- million-gallon spill.

The order came nearly five years to the day after an oil rig off the coast of Louisiana — the Deepwater Horizon — exploded, sending millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf. The spill ultimately spread across 43,000 miles, devastating the coast from Florida to Texas.

A report released last year by the National Wildlife Federation found that sea creatures were still struggling, if not dying in large numbers: in Louisiana, for instance, bottle-nose dolphins in 2014 were being found dead at four times the historic rate. Tens of thousands of small sea turtles known as Kemp’s ridley died after the disaster — and the number of nests in the region has only continued to plummet.

Fishermen suffered, too: fisheries were temporarily shut down, and under a previous settlement, BP agreed to pay billions in compensation. But some fishermen argued that the oil giant paid out unevenly, according to Reuters, while others remained in protracted disputes with the company. One longtime Louisiana shrimp fisherman, Phuong Nguyen, told NBC News last year that business was still uneven, and that the days of earning a six-figure income were long gone.

“I don’t have the money to retire,” he said.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a statement Monday that the order was one more step toward helping make the region’s economy whole and to correct “the worst environmental disaster in American history.”

“BP is receiving the punishment it deserves, while also providing critical compensation for the injuries it caused to the environment and the economy of the Gulf region,” Lynch said.

In a statement, BP spokesman Geoff Morrell said: “We are pleased that the Court has entered the Consent Decree, finalizing the historic settlement announced last July.”

Oil Spill? Like it was a glass of milk on the kitchen table. Like it was a pure accident and not rife with criminal negligence. The BP oil explosion.

Well, it will keep a team of lawyers busy avoiding any payment of the “settlement” for as long as possible. Just like the Exxon Valdez “settlement” that, 25 years later, has not been paid.

  3. Anonymous on Mon, 4th Apr 2016 8:58 pm

Agreed, “BP” will likely never pay a dime(of its own money that is). More than likely the uS deep state will fire up the printing presses and inflation let inflation destroy any ‘payments’ BP allegedly makes. The entity called BP will never be nationalized, liquidated, or any of its personnel brought to justice, nor will any real compensation ever be made.

uS oil corporations not only a law unto themselves, they are the law in americaland. They make and break laws as they see fit. If a law does(somehow)get passed they dont like, they pay to have it changed. If they need a new law to help advance their interests, they pay to have it passed.

    Opz.and let inflation-ghetto edit.

Exxon Valdez have still not paid??

    WTF!!

I you or I didn’t pay a fine, we would go to jail. You have a legal system every bit as corrupt as any African country.

It is high time that the man on the street in your country took DIRECT action against your corrupt political, legal and banking system. You need to fill the streets with non violent protests. Gandhi was an expert at non violent protests. People power CAN actually win.

Come on America, my country is far from perfect but at least we just released a document implicating numerous international companies involved in tax evasion via shell companies set up in tax havens. It has sent shock waves around the world. Imagine your Zionist media releasing a document implicating your Zionist run financial system? I don’t think so…

How long are you going to let yourselves get pissed on from a great height?

Dooma, get a grip, the reason US individuals were not part of the list like the rest of the world is because the US had an agreement with Panama regarding tax shelters. The US individuals are in tax shelters fraud, and money laundering elsewhere.

The US has the biggest money laundering racket in the world and it is called the DC beltway and Wall Street nexus. The moral hazard of US financial policy and the revolving door of connections between political and economic sectors makes these foreign tax havens less necessary.

Blaming everything on Zionist and US deep state does not always fit the square. It is common here with anti-Merikans to blame everything on the US they can because they can’t look in the mirror. Someone must be blamed and the US is a perfect target because it is the biggest and worst.

  7. dooma on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 4:22 am

I have plenty of grip mate. IF YOU READ MY POST CORRECTLY I do not blame America for the ills of the world.

You mention Wall Street. That is a perfect example of a Zionist playground.

I am talking about the average Americans pleading with you to get rid of these parasites. Your country is being sucked dry by them. Look at most of the chairmen of the fed. Look at most of the lawyers and media owners. Look at the owners of the bad banks. The evidence is overwhelming.

I have worked with many Yanks in the aviation industry and most seem like nice people. Very polite and friendly. But your masters are far from that.

And if you really want to compare things, check where my country (Australia) ranks on healthcare, standard of living, education etc compared to the US. NO my country is not perfect, far from it, but at least I can take any criticism about my island.

  8. Davy on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 7:59 am

Dooma, no shit Sherlock, we talk about this daily. Why do you think Trump is so popular with the clueless average American? They know something is wrong and that is because shit stinks and the smell cannot be hid with perfume. The shit is global it is just you English speaking non Americans love to bash the US. It is so much easier to find faults in others. Your country gets very little criticism and it is a mess. Your country is just not that important and that gets you guys pissed. It is a pride thAng. Many of you guys hate America from when you got mom’s milk. You always clarify it with “you Americans are nice in person” BS.

It is just one of those thAngs. It has been going on for years so you guys are habituated to it. I love to poke you guys because it is a matter of looking in the mirror and hating what you see but feeling it is someone else’s fault. The evil US is a great whipping boy for anti-Merikans and Americans alike. This is a global phenomenon with the US being the “WORST” and perfect for generalizations and cherry picking. But everyone else is in on it and it is called modern life.

Zionist don’t matter anymore at the level you guys want it to matter and the whole Zionist meme is increasingly passé.

I hate my country in so many ways yet “COME ON” you anti-Merikans don’t live here and don’t know the details ON THE GROUND. All you guys have is google and the distorted news. It is funny how you guys are so defensive about being called anti-Merikan (except Ape and your buddy Makati).

You are defensive for a reason. Do some self-reflection and get back to me. I like you guys on some levels but telling me who and what I am is not one of them. Telling me I am programmed, in denial, and flag waiving is bullshit. So are you focks. Look at yourself and comment on yourself some too THEN WE CAN TRADE NOTES.

Give it a rest already Davy.

Dooma is spot on in his analysis, as are all of the rest of those here that you falsely believe are attacking you.

  10. Steve on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 12:35 pm

    Apnea man:

It WAS an accident. Once a certain chain of events/decisions occurred over a month before the accident, there was no turning back, the well was lost, they just didn’t know it yet.

One the day of the accident, some less than desireable decisions were made, such as pumping to the supply boat while monitoring the well, but they didn’t have a choice, the rig can only hold so much fluid & riser volumes are enourmous.

In the end, it all came down to a 10% chance of whether or not the sheer Rams would land on a tool joint or not & they did.

I think the ultimate fault lies with the US Government for not mandating that blind shear Rams Be designed to cut through tool joints as well as drill pipe. Why the hell approve a BOP stack who’s last line of defense only has a 90% chance of working?

This is based on the assumption that 9 feet of every +/-90′ stand of drill-pipe has the OD/ID of a Tool Joint – or 10% of the drill string is tool joint…

  11. Davy on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 12:42 pm

Give it a rest Gregger. This is between Dooma and I. You and your good boy network love to bitch, moan, and complain then finger point and finally pat each other on the back with a phony “job well done kicking em in the teeth” You are spot on in that regards. Is it the water in British Columbia or what? You and Ape think you are God’s gift to mankind. I see nothing but stupid nationalism and poor manners.

Another Day, Another Pipeline, Another Environmental Disaster
From the people that brought you the Keystone Pipeline comes an exciting new project.

    http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/news/a43669/transcanada-pipeline-oil-spill/

  13. Steve on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 6:14 pm

Apneaman; if you would allow yourself to be a bit more open-minded, you would quickly find that there is a worldwide war over the price of oil right now… & to the uninformed observer, nothing is as it seems…

Transcanada shut down a 600 BOPD pipeline over this possible leak at a very critical time…

That pipeline went straight to Cushing… Oil prices are embarking on a Long-term Up-trend & by this pipeline shutting down, they have denied Obama of his plan to “fake” overflow the Cushing Storage tanks, thus limiting any advancement in crude oil prices…

The oil didn’t come from a pipeline, it was almost certainly dumped there by a truck, for the purpose of shutting the pipeline down. Did Transcanada do it or did they just play along??? Who knows???

Obama’s next ploy to hold oil prices back will be to increase interest rates in April 27th – when everyone thinks the April FED meeting is an inactive meeting (or has been traditionally)…

Nothing is as it seems on the surface…

  14. Steve on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 6:20 pm

It’s is very interesting to me how some of the more prominent posters here, don’t really have any idea what is going on the world with regards to the oil & gas markets…

Thinking that you understand something, but in reality having no clue is a dangerous state to live one’s life in…

  15. Apneaman on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 6:37 pm

Golly gee wilikers Steve, thanks fer learning me up on how the world really works. If I could just get my hands on a secret decoder ring like yours it would free up more time for you to instruct the other ignorant commenter’s around here.

    You da bomb Stevee-O!

Just try & be a bit more open-minded & you might just learn that what the media presents regarding US Foreign policy & the crude oil market is never what is really going on…

    geo,

“Just try & be a bit more open-minded & you might just learn that what the media presents regarding US Foreign policy & the crude oil market is never what is really going on”

Show me MSM, show me a correct version from your source of information. For all I know your a N Korean wannabe.

  19. GregT on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 7:51 pm

“I see nothing but stupid nationalism and poor manners.”

That’s because you see the world through nationalistic blinders Davy. Most of the rest of us could care less about nationalism.

  20. Boat on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 8:03 pm

    GregT,

Was I mistaken? I thought you were in charge of information for N Korea. Extremely nationalistic.

  21. Apneaman on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 8:04 pm

Too funny Greg. Same as geotard trying to school me on propaganda when he comes from the most propagandised country in history. You know, the one where they force easily impressionable children to swear their loyalty to the government at school every morning along with the national anthem. Anyone who thinks that won’t have any effect doesn’t understand the psychology behind propaganda and social engineering.

  22. GregT on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 8:27 pm

    Boat,

You’d need to have some semblance of intelligence to be mistaken. In your case, it all boils down to sheer stupidity.

  23. dooma on Wed, 6th Apr 2016 8:33 pm

Have you calmed down a bit yet David?

You are acting a bit on the paranoid side. As well as putting words into my mouth.

I am just telling it how I see it. And if you cannot handle the truth, that is not my problem.

There is a good reason for the anti-American sentiment that you so rabidly defend. Your nation has systematically raped the world for it’s own benefit. It is no wonder that you are going to get some negative comments.

If you read my post properly, you would see that there were no lies, no ill wishes in it. Just a call to stand up against corruption.

I read the same media as you do. Unless you have some secret source? Your bank bail out was the biggest sign of who pulls the strings in your country.

As far as my country goes, go for it. Pick the crap out of it. The most you will raise is a yawn or a chuckle. I bet you don’t even know anything about domestic politics in my country? Because you are so insular. Saying my country is a “mess” is no different to saying that the world is a mess.

And if you are a Christian, don’t even bother ranting and raving at me. Because if you are, I have no time trying to talk sense to delusional people.

I am sad to say that you are what is wrong with America. Full of pride and light on substance. And telling me who is and isn’t my friends on this forum means that you have a complex about being liked. Very schoolyard in your cognitions.

And to say that your Zionist leaders are old news and irrelevant is completely wrong. It has never been more relevant.

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-04-05/rotschild-admits-america-biggest-tax-haven-world-obama-slams-tax-evasion

“Rothschild, the centuries-old European financial institution, has opened a trust company in Reno, Nev., a few blocks from the Harrah’s and Eldorado casinos. It is now moving the fortunes of wealthy foreign clients out of offshore havens such as Bermuda, subject to the new international disclosure requirements, and into Rothschild-run trusts in Nevada, which are exempt.

    * * *

For financial advisers, the current state of play is simply a good business opportunity. In a draft of his San Francisco presentation, Rothschild’s Penney wrote that the U.S. “is effectively the biggest tax haven in the world.” The U.S., he added in language later excised from his prepared remarks, lacks “the resources to enforce foreign tax laws and has little appetite to do so.”

    Nuff said.
