World's top firms cause $2.2tn of environmental damage

The cost of pollution and other damage to the natural environment caused by the world's biggest companies would wipe out more than one-third of their profits if they were held financially accountable, a major unpublished study for the United Nations has found.

The report comes amid growing concern that no one is made to pay for most of the use, loss and damage of the environment, which is reaching crisis proportions in the form of pollution and the rapid loss of freshwater, fisheries and fertile soils.

"What we're talking about is a completely new paradigm," said Richard Mattison, Trucost's chief operating officer and leader of the report team. "Externalities of this scale and nature pose a major risk to the global economy and markets are not fully aware of these risks, nor do they know how to deal with them."

The biggest single impact on the $2.2tn estimate, accounting for more than half of the total, was emissions of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change. Other major "costs" were local air pollution such as particulates, and the damage caused by the over-use and pollution of freshwater.

The true figure is likely to be even higher because the $2.2tn does not include damage caused by household and government consumption of goods and services, such as energy used to power appliances or waste; the "social impacts" such as the migration of people driven out of affected areas, or the long-term effects of any damage other than that from climate change. The final report will also include a higher total estimate which includes those long-term effects of problems such as toxic waste.

That's an interesting calculation, more than half that dollar amount assigned to a molecule critical to life on earth but reported as causing trillions of dollars in environmental damage? I'd like to see the calculations for that. In reality, because your measuring the environment in economic terms, inside of a larger corrupt monetary system - the number is meaningless.

Donald Rumsfeld announced the Pentagon misplaced about that much on 9/10/01, it's pocket change. It doesn't sound like much damage but the report is for the UN, so there you go.

The UN has sanctioned every real environmental nightmare since WW2 including the current mess in the middle east while telling us a molecule essential to life as we know it is our worst enemy. The agenda of the UN is getting very plain to see, maybe their new slogan can be "Don't mind our hypocrisy, all your carbon belong to us". No thanks.

But ignoring externalized costs of business is what makes modern capitalism possible!

Darn families complaining about MTBE in their drinking water! Darn pregnant women complaining about mercury in their tuna! Everyone should just take their medicine like a man! (Including nursing babies)
An ideology is by definition not a search for TRUTH-but a search for PROOF that its point of view is right

Equals barter and negotiate-people with power just take

You cant defend freedom by eliminating it-unknown

Our elected reps should wear sponsor patches on their suits so we know who they represent-like Nascar-Roy
