What Myers Briggs Personality Type are you?

Unread postby some_guy282 » Tue 10 May 2005, 23:21:42

Many of us often wonder what it is about us that make us "get" Peak Oil, when so many others don't believe Peak Oil will ever happen, or create any serious problems when it does occur. We've all heard the long list of excuses. "There is plenty of oil left to discover." "Technology will save us." "It wont happen in my lifetime." "It's all a lie so oil companies can make more money!" etc. etc.

One thing that has come up and seems to set us apart from everyone else is our Myers Briggs personality type. INTJ's and INTP's collectively only comprise about 3-5% of the total population, but when this topic has come up before on this site and others, 70-80% of Peak Oil believers fall into either one of those categorys. I think it's high time for an official poll. So, what Myers Briggs personality type are you?

If you don't already know your type, you can test yourself here.

You can find descriptions of all of the different types here.

Please feel free to add more links to further descriptions of Myers Briggs types. The website I originally used was much better to the one I've linked to here, but the first one is now dead.

I chose INTP but my T/F score is so close to zero I spend half my time as an INFP.

I took this a few years ago and wound up an INTP/J. My 'P' and 'J' scores were identical.

I'm an ISFJ, or iSfJ, as one analyst put it. DEFINITELY a peak oiler! I'm not sure, but I think when I tested for this back in the 80s, one of those letters was different, but I can't remember which. ALWAYS been an "I," though!

How do the percentages work - I was only 1 % introvert - does that mean I'm nearly an extrovert? And hubby was only 4% extrovert so so does that mean he's nearly an introvert? :)

While I have an alternate "meditative" state of consciousness that puts me into INFP mode when appropriate, my normal day-to-day personality has typically been INTJ (the last time I took the test the numbers were 22 77 77 22). So the "N" is the one letter for me that's consistantly very strong no matter what mode I'm operating in. And yes, I'm a Peaker.

I find that the I/E, T/F, and P/J letters are actually quite easy to control depending on the situation; once you've gained a good grip on your core identity it's amazing how tangential those things are and how easily those aspects of your psyche can be changed to fit your needs. But the N/S letter is a wholly different breed; I don't know how to be an S if I tried, and S people are generally the type of people I have the hardest time getting along with. To me it's almost like the other three letters are learned traits, whereas the capacity for intuition is wired in (or if it's not, then learning to be an N at least seems to be quite difficult).

But is this test valid? Does it mean anything?

The people at CPP aren’t too concerned if the list doesn’t seem to match your type. They advise such persons to see the one who administered the test and ask for help in finding a more suitable list by changing a letter or two in your four-letter type. (See the report CPP publishes on its Web site.) Furthermore, no matter what your preferences, your behavior will still sometimes indicate contrasting behavior. Thus, no behavior can ever be used to falsify the type, and any behavior can be used to verify it.

This stuff is based on the "work" of Jung, who has been pretty thoroughly debunked.

The reason scientists do controlled studies rather than rely solely on their clinical observations and memories as Jung did is because it is easy to deceive ourselves and fit the data to our hypotheses and theories.

Well, it has to mean something, because so far it's showing that the majority of people who accept Peak Oil think alike.

Maybe some of us could get family members who don't believe to take the test, without telling them it has anything to do with Peak Oil? I think my father and I are otherwise very much alike, but he laughs at Peak Oil. I'd be interested to see if he scores as an INTJ like me.

Not necessarily! You have a self-selected sample here.

My assumptions about people who accept peak oil are being constantly challenged. I'm finding they're no more scientific, or skeptical-thinking, than the rest of the world.
