Sun cutting 3,000 jobs, blames Oracle takeover delay

Sun Microsystems said on Tuesday it is cutting 3,000 jobs over the next 12 months because of its delayed takeover by US business software giant Oracle. In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Sun said the layoffs were part of a restructuring plan brought about by the hold on its 7.4-billion-dollar purchase by Oracle.

I'd suppose that was inevitable.

Chrysler offers buyout to 23,000 workers Latest move to pare workforce comes just before automaker reveals 5-year recovery plan. Last Updated: November 1, 2009:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Days before unveiling its latest recovery plan, Chrysler Group has extended a buyout program to 23,000 U.S. workers in an effort to further trim its workforce.
In a statement, Chrysler said workers have until Nov. 13 to accept the proposal, and that the company would determine who qualifies for it depending on operational needs. The company said termination dates would be at its discretion.
The automaker said special programs were being offered at facilities that are being forced to close as a result of the bankruptcy process that occurred earlier this year. The deadline for accepting those programs depends on the facility, Chrysler said.
Chrysler emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June, saying it would close some of its U.S. plants as part of the reorganization. Its ownership is a group that includes the Italian automaker Fiat, the U.S. government, the United Auto Workers union's retiree trust and the Canadian and Ontario governments. *...

Sprint to cut 2,000 to 2,500 jobs

Sprint Nextel said it will cut 2,000 to 2,500 positions in the fourth quarter in an effort to save $350 million. The cuts will be completed by December 31 ... the company said the cuts won't impact customer service, something the Sprint has been trying to improve. Nevertheless, Sprint said call volume has decreased so it has discontinued 27 call centers.

Perhaps that won't affect customer service because there are *less customers* to service ...

Johnson & Johnson to cut more than 7,000 jobs worldwide

Johnson & Johnson, a leading US health care products company, said on Tuesday it will slash between six and seven percent of its global workforce, more than 7,000 jobs, to cut costs ... J&J, which makes drugs, consumer products and medical devices, has about 117,000 employees worldwide, which would bring the number of jobs to be eliminated to a range of 7,000 and 8,200.

And they say that these are "defensive" companies.
Looks to me like defensive companies now have to defend their defensive reputation.

Yep, here's another one, though the numbers don't quite seem to tally :

AOL: We need to fire 2,500 'volunteers'

AOL, which has already told investors that it will spend up to $200 million firing a good chunk of its staff, has now told its employees. It is looking for "up to 2,500 volunteers," CEO Tim Armstrong told his staff Thursday. That's a third of the company's payroll. The voluntary layoff program begins December 4, a few days before the company spins off from Time Warner. If AOL doesn't get enough volunteers, it will ax people on its own.
