New Exploration Technology

Unread postby SShepard » Fri 06 May 2005, 15:57:31

Recently on his show World Business Review, Alexander Haig featured Energy Exploration Technologies, a company with a technology that is able to find oil and natural gas structures from an airplane.

Anyone ever heard of them?

Why don't they use satellites ?

Because the test equipment is too heavy and needs too much power. Also, airplanes fly at much lower altitudes, giving far greater detail.

No satellites involved. If you want more info, here is a link on their website that describes a successful test of the technology:

Comments anyone? If this technology works it would seem to push back the "peak" considerably.

I posted this over in 'Current Events' but realize it's a much better fit in this forum.

I think this type of technology just would allow us to more easily find the oil that is currently classified as "undiscovered". This type of technology does not increase the reserves of a given oil field or allow for a greater percentage of the oil to be recovered.

We can still only recover about 50% of the oil. To push back the peak considerably, we would need some sort of advance with allows oil, with is technically unrecoverable, to become feasible.

I looked at the website and in particular I read their description of the technology. I'm not an expert on this field, but it looks very suspicious. I understand that they're not going to give a detailed account of how the
technology works, but it sounded like they were adding big words to make it
sound important. Example: they say that their detectors detect scalar fields
that they "believe" (they don't seem to know) are related to the Higgs field.
The Higgs field is postulated by the standard model of particle physics to
explain why certain particles have mass. The problem is that there's no direct
evidence so far of its existence. Its detection has eluded the biggest
particle accelerators built so far (like the 9km in diameter at CERN). However
these guys seem to detect it from an airplane.

I think there is a contract expiration in 2006 that allows firms to license US airplane surveilance equipment that can measure soil density to identify bunkers.

This can be used to look for mining opportunities and oil and gas.

Aeneas- I agree. If this does work it's revolutionary and thus you have to approach it with some scepticism. Scaning past press releases, one positive sign is that oil companies don't just give you 33% equity in wells if the technology is a hoax. Similiarly, while the wells drilled have not all produced, each time seismic has confirmed the existence of a structure, which is exactly what it is supposed to do. Saying it's a leg up over seismic is an understatement. Guess we'll see what happens in the months to come.

What about the vast amount of unexplored areas in Africa and offshore that is mentioned in the video with Haig?

There are no vast unexplored areas. Deffeyes covers this in his first book. The world is fully explored. Even "closed" countries like Iran.

Will we find more oil? Yes. But not enough to make up for the death of giants like Ghawar. If you look at the numbers, oil is continuing to be discovered each year. But the finds are growing smaller and smaller.

One more interview that goes into greater detail about the technology and unexplored areas in Algeria and South America:
