JUST SAY NO!

How to save energy through both societal and individual actions.

JUST SAY NO!

Unread postby grabby » Sun 30 Apr 2006, 11:36:43

Well, Friday wa a day spent driving to the paint shop to find a buffer, nothing good there, went to car shop, found some that were 80 dollars and look like they were Made in JAPAN in the 50's, they would probably run two hours until the gears melt.

Drove to Ranch and home, and hardware, and finally at Faber industrial (good old company), found an old style MADE OF IRON! heavy multispeed LOW RPM buffer but for 200 bucks.

America made is still good quality but you pay arms and legs for it.

spent 20 dollars in gas. wasted a day. got what we THOUGHT we needed,.

It Used to be you could go into any store and get a good piece of equipment for cheap, but now there is so much junk out there you waste your day and gas.

anyway , I spent 20 dollars in gas. when it hit me.

OIL = MONEY

when you drive your car, you are burning money.
Phone doesn't work. They all say they have great buffers!

If I would have stayed home I would have the 220 dollars back!
hand grease could do the same thing only take ten times longer, and VOILA!

It would have taken the same time as driving all over town!
AND I WOULD BE STRONGER!
So now I am a little weaklinger with an ulcer and 220 bucks poorer.
(I coulda filled up all the gas cans!)

This whole system has its drawbacks.

Can't afford to go to college, don't have enoughgas to get there, says the news this morning.

Used to be you had not a choice, you just got the rags out and worked, no questions asked.

I can go back there and I think I am going to.
You guys can stay here and consume cheap junk I am going to try the second hand stores and driving my bike.

It won't help the economy (A VT pickup with pipes and a
Nissan with pipes are revving at the light and just raced today, it was funny, they were both slow as molasses, but the pickup won.

Do I really need the super stores from now on?
What happens if I kick the hapbit, will I die?

Will be interesting.

We should start a thred STAYING AWAY FROM WALLMART.

You've just hit the nail on the head! Once you come to accept that most things can be done by hand, you realize you can survive.

This is why i think there will be such drastic hardships in America...it will be by peoples own doings.

Wash dishes by hand? I'd rather die!
Walk or bike to work? Impossible!
Carpool? Forget it!
Turn the heat down? Not a chance in hell!
Grow some of your own food? I'd rather starve!

I find this particular knowlege & acceptance to be one of the MOST IMPORTANT items in your PO survival kit!!!
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.

Walking or biking on a highway to work is largely impossible for the suburban peoples.
1. Because of the length of time it would take.
2. Because most people are so very out of shape and would have a heart attack if they suddenly switched.

Turning the heat down can work. People do this even now.

Growing your own food is limited to tomatoes and strawberries. McDonald's is tastier and probably less expensive (you have to invest time, you can have a double cheeseburger for $1, with a lousy job paying paying something like $10 an hour, it's not worth it right now. It's about the 'economics'.)

Growing your own food - difficulty depends on what you're growing. There are quite a few things that will essentially grow themselves with no more attention than a pot plant, including:

Chokoes (chayote, etc. Type of squash)
Squash
Pumpkin
Cucumbers
Melons
Potatoes

All of the above are vine things which will ramble all over your yard and basically grow themselves, except the potatoes. Stick a couple of sprouting potatoes in a pot, water occasionally, and add extra dirt as the shoots get taller. Wait until the green bits die off, then harvest. Too easy.

And if you think bike riding and food growing are unacceptable, you should see people's faces when you tell them about dumpster diving ... :-D

To add to your list kfish, I can say that a complete plant n00b like me is successfully growing beans in his window. Very easy to plant, germinates in about 2 weeks, and I just water daily. I rotate the plant about once a week to keep the stalk straight.
