Abundance - Corny Porn

I haven't read this but the Author was just on a morning show

Abundance

Strange book cover (looks salvaged)

The book is an uber-optimist's view of the future. But the first thing the guy pointed out on the morning show was that life expectancy was twice what it was when the US was started.

The use of spaces in text is a crucial element.

This book is really titled: "A Bun Dance" and is about feeling absolutely exhilarated
by observing all the stainless steel rollers are filled with tubular foodstuffs at the
local C Store, and then dancing around wiggling your butt with joy out by the
gas pumps while everyone is watching the numeric display on the pump deal
them a blow to the gut, and unable to look up and even see the buffoon perform.

Finally the C Store manager comes out, gives the guy a hot dog that spun on the
rollers for 3 days until mummified on a bun on the condition the dancer will jam
it into his yap and clear out pronto. Be sure to take the tin foil off of this tome
and make yourself a snappy little hat.

IMHO anyhow,

Looks like an old-skool TV dinner with the foil being torn off.

The world has tons of oil left

Unread postby AdamB » Wed 07 Mar 2018, 14:49:01

The consultancy Rystad Energy has released new estimates of global oil resources that help underscore why the discussion in energy circles has transformed over the last decade from when supplies will peak to when demand will taper off, because there's lots of oil left and being discovered. The data: "Rystad Energy estimates that liquid resources from mature assets grew 151 billion barrels over the last four years, which is almost 17% more than the amount produced in those years. This brings the total remaining liquid resource count to 1.227 trillion barrels as of year-end 2017," they said in a brief report.

Doomers, when there's a 5 year trend where the supply and demand for oil isn't increasing, be SURE and get back to us about how things are scary. At that point, it will be worth doing a recheck -- i.e. is the cause because of a large uptake in consumer BEV's, or something bad?

Until then, economic reality keeps proving all the short term doom forecasts dead wrong within a year or two.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

The End of Scarcity

Unread postby AdamB » Thu 22 Mar 2018, 15:41:24

Doomsdayers fret as world population grows, yet human productivity increases all the while and resources remain abundant. It is often posited that population growth must inevitably result in the exhaustion of natural resources, environmental destruction, and even mass starvation. Only last month, a much-discussed study in the journal Nature Sustainability insisted that “Humanity faces the challenge of how to achieve a high quality of life for over 7 billion people without destabilizing critical planetary processes.” We have seen this before. “The Limits to Growth,” which was published by the Club of Rome in 1972, looked at the interplay between industrial development, population growth, malnutrition, the availability of nonrenewable resources, and the quality of the environment. It concluded that “If present growth trends in world population, industrialization, pollution, food production, and resource depletion continue unchanged… [t]he most probable result will be a rather sudden and uncontrollable

The End of Scarcity

There's a big difference between, "BAU growth hasn't caused a massive problem, killing huge numbers of people quickly yet" and "So far, we're keeping things in rough balance at 7 billion people" and "The End of Scarcity", as though all material problems are sure to be solved.

For one thing, big problems like AGW, pollution, water scarcity, land scarcity, etc. only grow worse, and are only being (barely) staved off by the full force humans can bring to bear of innovation and technology -- while BAU growth relentlessly ratchets up the pressure on the overall system.

I think either hard crash doomers or cornies claiming confidence in any sort of major "victory", including one set to happen "real soon now", is vastly overstating their side's case.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.
