Doomsdayers fret as world population grows, yet human productivity increases all the while and resources remain abundant. It is often posited that population growth must inevitably result in the exhaustion of natural resources, environmental destruction, and even mass starvation. Only last month, a much-discussed study in the journal Nature Sustainability insisted that “Humanity faces the challenge of how to achieve a high quality of life for over 7 billion people without destabilizing critical planetary processes.” We have seen this before.
The End of Scarcity
There's a big difference between, "BAU growth hasn't caused a massive problem, killing huge numbers of people quickly yet" and "So far, we're keeping things in rough balance at 7 billion people" and "The End of Scarcity", as though all material problems are sure to be solved.
For one thing, big problems like AGW, pollution, water scarcity, land scarcity, etc. only grow worse, and are only being (barely) staved off by the full force humans can bring to bear of innovation and technology -- while BAU growth relentlessly ratchets up the pressure on the overall system.
I think either hard crash doomers or cornies claiming confidence in any sort of major "victory", including one set to happen "real soon now", is vastly overstating their side's case.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.
