Group Memberships

Unread postby Aaron » Tue 29 Jan 2008, 12:37:46

At the top of every page of the forum is this link:

Usergroups

http://www.peakoil.com/gate.html?name=F ... le=groupcp

You can now select a preferred group for your account among 3 basic choices.

Cornucopian - Subscribing to the "horn of plenty" idea that hydrocarbon depletion will have ultimately beneficial consequences.

Moderate - Subscribing to the idea that hydrocarbon depletion will have serious, but manageable consequences.

Doomer - Subscribing to the idea that hydrocarbon depletion will lead to destructive, if not cataclysmic consequences.

So jump right in and declare your affiliation.

Apart from declaring my position are there any benefits to this? Such as discussions only open to those who share my outlook on PO?

That's an interesting 2nd generation suggestion.

Opinions?

I'm open to trying that out.

Or not... as the case may be.

No, I'm not just being crabby. A few more categories? I don't completely fit. I'm in between somewhere. Ideally you need a branching algorithm or concept map to handle the complexity. Or at least a few more categories. It could be interesting to make some sort of PO family tree.

Sorry... if you don't fit exactly then either make a compromise decision... or don't.

Can you imagine filtering out all but the cornucopian posts? It would read like a rap sheet on Lorenzo. 8)

What will be interesting is...

Who will post first in each new forum?

And.... begin.

Alas, our membership applications to the group appear to require manual approval...which is probably a very good thing...but until we are approved, no initial posting can occur...

This makes me feel like I do when I register my political party so I can take part in one or another of the primaries. I'd rather choose a third party or none, but I end up registering for one of the two majors so I get a primary vote.

Here the problem is that all the fun and popular people are joining the doomer group, but I'd like to identify as a moderate. But I bet ya a dollar and a half there will never be a forum open only to boring-ol' moderates. So, if I want full access, I need to be a doomer.

Ya know, I changed my mind. This isn't a two party system at all. It's a one-party system! Yer all a bunch of damn reds!

I'm a doomer as much because of the 'engineered financial apocalypse' as 'hydrocarbon depletion.'

It seems to me there are plenty of solutions that could work in concert to alleviate any number of our problems. But it also seems to the me that those with the power to influence outcomes do not wish for solutions - but instead for the enslavement of the population.

Moderate, I think my oh so many posts here bear out that description.

Aparently I need SPG's approval to actually be a member of the group.

So, doomers believe nothing survives, not even light. Moderates believe 3 billion die and the 3 billion that are left eek out a wretched miserable existance. Cornnucopians believe 5.5 billion die and the remaining 500 million run naked through the woods eating nuts and berries.

Sound right?

Oh, is that it? I thought that Cornucopians believed that population continued to expand to 9 billion or more, and energy use continued expanding until we all blast off to colonize space.

I thought that doomers were anyone who believed that the die-off would be a time of warfare and chaos with starving hordes and bullets flying until there are no more bullets, and resulting in a miserable existance for the survivors with iron age tech and a feudal society, a-la A Canticle for Liebowitz.

And thus, moderates would be those who believe in a manageable, though unpleasant reduction in population, ending in a lower than current population and technological state, but one that might be short of total hell during the descent and possibly even pleasant afterward. I guess another name for this would be "Soft Landing," though I am not sure.

We got to get these definitions ironed out if people are going to choose affiliations. Though I suppose we could all just take our best guess and then wait for the eventual epiphany, "I don't fit in with these people," after which we'd come home to our true usergroup, like a prodigal daughter.
