It's certainly not the first flood they've had there, but recently they've been getting quite a string of them...none so far like this one, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGs2iLoDUYE

Meanwhile, deluge doom is hitting down under, too.

Winton flooding: Aerial footage shows extent of floods in drought-stricken Queensland town

Lands End Station, near Julia Creek, has received 327 millimetres of rain so far this month – the highest March total since records began more than 90 years ago.

The most recent record was from 1971, when the station received 305.8 millimetres of rain during March.

There’s a strange irony related to this subject [oil and gas extraction] that the better you do the job at exploiting this oil and gas, the sooner it is gone.

I'm not sure that reporting on extreme events is talking about doom, not in the usual sense at least. This isn't some vague warning about some future event.

These are consequences that are falling around people's heads right now.

If you will, doom is here now.

Highest amount of rain ever recorded in one day in parts of the UAE: 50 times more than the average rainfall for March!

You seem to be only able to post non-sequiturs around here any more. I hope that gives you some kind of joy. Of course, it's just a waste of everyone else's time.

PStarr really should start a blog and compete with Kunstler or something. He seems more interested in being a curmudgeon/satirist than to actually seek a better understanding of what's going on. It's really just a plea for attention. I guess the redwoods aren't the best company in the world.

We are at double the "normal" rainfall with no end in site. Based on my personal observations, the rain comes with more intensity, more like a tropical downpour, than our usual drizzle.

I'm guessing/betting the future climate here will be, warmer with a hot dry season, and a warm, but very wet season. I can certainly work with that.

'Unprecedented': 2 Dead as Record Rainfall Floods Houston - NBC News

More than a foot of rain deluged parts of Houston on Monday, leaving two dead as surging waters flooded homes and highways for thousands of residents who were warned to stay inside.

Hundreds of flights were canceled, mass transit was shut down and schools were closed after a season's worth of rain fell in just a matter of hours. Almost 17 inches of rain had inundated the city by 2 p.m. ET.

Bush Intercontinental Airport grappled with nearly 650 flight cancellations and more than 1,100 delays. METRO Houston also suspended all rail and bus services, as swaths of the city and nearby Waller County were walloped with 16.8 inches of rain before noon, according to the National Weather Service.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner closed all city buildings and canceled the State of the City address that had been scheduled for Monday. "This is a dangerous situation and I do not want our employees trying to get to work," Turner said. "Do not go out until conditions improve." Houston Independent School District was also closed Monday, according to the district.

Eight buildings had been damaged by the water, Turner said, and 88,000 people in the city of Houston alone were without power. Turner warned that the situation could get much worse as seven bayous across Harris County had exceeded their banks, and two damns were at risk of breaking.

Two people were found dead inside their submerged vehicles — the first in a car, the second in an 18-wheeler — though authorities couldn't immediately confirm if their deaths were weather-related.

"This is an unprecedented amount of rain," Turner said. "It's been stubborn, and it's not moving anytime fast."

Lotsa rain there in Houston. Some interesting videos in the article, including a report of an oil storage tank struck by lightning.

Nairobi is one of those cities I put on my bucket list as a young 20 something as a place to see on the way to another destination, in this case Kilimanjaro. From all the descriptions I have read in the past I had no idea it was vulnerable to this kind of disaster.

It's kind of funny if you think about it, Nairobi is a very young city, founded in 1899. Compare that to Rome which is 2,500 years old or Beijing which about 3,000 years old. Old cities have been through hundreds of crisis events like this, but new Nairobi doesn't have that to look back on for inspiration.
