I have been to Brazil over 50 times, I know all the provinces except Rodonia, my former business took me there 5 times a year minimum and I also have relatives on my mothers side that I have spent a lot of time with.
The two countries with the greatest disparity of wealth in Latin America has been for decades Venezuela and Brazil. When you have a huge population of disenfranchised you have the electorate desperate for order and jobs and susceptible to populists and despots. To the left and you get Chavez and Maduro and the Venezuelan disaster. To the right a populist wanting to dismantle democracy and return the military to power... Bolsonaro could emerge as a 21st century Pinochet.
The lesson to be taken from Venezuela and Brazil is how the political volatility heats up when the middle class no longer exists and you have extreme disparity of wealth and corruption. The underclass becomes restless and votes idiots into office.
Reflect on this as you consider US politics in the last 30 years, the increasing disparity on the rise, the corruption of lobbyists influencing politics, the emergence of populist clowns elected by a population increasingly full of grievances.
Having said all of that Brazil was always my favorite country to visit. This amazing melting pot of cultures, italians, japanese, afro. The country has a dynamic that is wild and yet quite cultured. There are few places I have been were I laughed so hard while doing business..... hysterical antics by my friends and colleagues, irreverent, corrupt, entrepreneurial in the midst of chaos and disorder. Highly entertaining country.. And the women.... don't get me started..... Fucked up but fun.
Patiently awaiting the pathogens. Our resiliency resembles an invasive weed. We are the Kudzu Ape
