In another thread, Paul Ruben (or some other US Government official at Davos I think) spoke of "drastic austerity programmes" (or something like that). For the sake of argument, what form do you think these austerity measures could take (in the USA)?

I can see maybe some rationing of fuel, massive pension funds being liquidated, perhaps seizure of privately held gold, perhaps the real estate bubble will pop, but what other avenues could the US pursue incase of a massive dollar sell off?
