SPOKANE, Wash. -- An emergency was declared Tuesday at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in southeastern Washington after a portion of a tunnel that contains rail cars full of nuclear waste collapsed.

The alert was activated shortly before 8:30 a.m. at the Hanford Emergency Operations Center, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

The tunnels are about 25 miles northwest of the center of Richland in the Hanford nuclear reservation’s 200 East Area.


An aerial survey mid-morning Tuesday showed an opening about 20 feet by 20 feet into one of two tunnels, which had been covered with about eight feet of soil.

I would just make the point that Hanford has nothing whatsoever to do with nuclear energy. Hanford is a weapons lab that produces bomb grade nuclear materials, under the control of a government agency.
