Iceland's authorities have evacuated an area close to the country's Bardarbunga volcano over fears it could erupt.
The area, which is more than 300km (190 miles) from the capital Reykjavik, has no permanent residents but sits within a national park popular with tourists.
If some weren't aware the greatest potential danger from a sub-glacial eruption is necessarily from the volcano itself but from a flashflood: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8624748.stm

not sure where you were for Mt St Helens...I was on a field trip very nearby and got to witness the wrath and devastation first hand. Way cool for a geologist....tres frigging scary for a citizen.
When hot gases mix with ice and snow you generally get what is called a Nuee Ardent which turns mud and soil and everything else into a ball of plastic material traveling at the speed of a Ferrari Testorosa full out with the density of ...well, I guess, mud. Don't want to be there or anywhere near it.

Iceland has issued a red alert to the aviation industry for the Bardarbunga volcano, meaning significant ash emissions are likely.
The Icelandic Met Office has warned that a small sub-glacial eruption is under way at Bardarbunga.
The air space over the site has been closed, but all Icelandic airports currently remain open, authorities say.
Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in 2010, producing an ash cloud that severely disrupted air travel.
The red alert is the highest warning on the country's five-point scale.
