Graeme wrote:Australia nears 10% renewable power as hydro and wind deliverAustralia is almost halfway to its 2020 renewable energy target, mostly thanks to hydro and wind power, the country’s Clean Energy Council (CEC) says.
Renewable energy provided 9.6% of the nation’s electricity needs in the 12 months to 30 September, up from 8.7% in the previous year.
Australia’s ambition is to source 20% of its power from renewables by 2020.
According to the CEC’s annual survey, hydropower – boosted by additional rainfall in key areas – contributed just over two-thirds of Australia’s total renewable energy in the period.
Although there was significantly more wind-power generated compared to the year before, its relative contribution fell slightly to 21.9% due to the increased contribution of hydro. Wind was followed by bioenergy (8.5%) and PV power (2.3%).

Can't see the benefit of crowing about water/hydro power in Australia when that system is a part of, albeit a significant part, of our marvelous salt pan development scheme i.e. the Murry-Darling river system environment (and, I hasten to include Cubby Station within the mesh) , where we presently enjoy an ever encroaching NaCl issue
apart from those two rivers, lake Alexandrina and the Murry Mouth silting up where is the water supply to mitigate this problem coming from over the next twenty years, more excess rainfall?
Upgrading the turbo-generators as the commission has now done cannot be sustainable in the long term as there are those significant EROI issues which must be faced. As to NEW hydro-power stations
we're about the driest continent on this earth. But we got a good sense o' humor.
