It's only really affecting the site badly while the US mods sleep and before I get into the office. I think the best solution is to ramp up the bot defences, but we may need an upgrade to the site code for that. Dan?

'The US mods' is almost every mod. Iowem is never here anymore, you Dave are the only active one in Europe. This leaves from west coast USA bedtime until you get on here, if you miss a morning, it can be 10 hours or more the site is fully clogged with carp.

H I am new here and just wanted to charm in on what you are saying about handleing spam. I own a blog that gets lots of traffic and have to deal with the spammers myself.

I have found that pre-approval does work great but also wait five days because they will come back 3 days after leaving a post then pop a link in the post. I think with Google's update us bloggers and forum owners will not be dealing with the spammers as much in the near future.

Hope this helps it has cut my spamming problem down by 60% so I thought I would share.

Here's an analogy: Remember how the Starfleet crew would zap the borg with their phasers and, for a while, it would work; then, the Borg would change the frequency of their personal shields and the Starfleet crew would have to work out what the new solution was to deal with them?
Same thing here, only we have to deal with different posting groups from different countries and skill levels. Needless to say, we are learning what works and what doesn't. Members of the Staff are also working on the viability of a couple of ideas for additional help.
Until we have something we can agree on that doesn't stiffle our regular posters, just go with the flow.

The thing about spammers is they're happy to send fifteen million messages for one click, because they don't do the work, their computers do. But yeah, the spam fighting techniques on this site are circa 1998. Would it be so hard to put in a captcha image with email verification for new accounts?

I promise not to post any spam and be deleted. Unfortunately I have recently had to eat some real Spam and act delighted. Eating the spam allows it to penetrate and dwell in very dear places and not just be in your head and eyes. Having said that, I am at least glad that I ate the real spam instead of rubbing it on my head and into my eyes. I am happy to say my real spam has now all been deleted, and I am glad it is gone and hope to avoid anymore. If you have any friends from Hawaii and go to their home for dinner, ask for the chicken dishes or seafood for dinner up front.

Multiple suggestions have been made on this thread; captcha etc. Limiting posts for a set time etc. Something should be done. Admin doesn't even post. Never answers these questions. Spends hours upon hours tweaking the operating system but won't lift a finger to these assholes. Why? It doesn't make sense.
