This plot is inaccurate. It shows the deficit for 2009 as part of the Bush Administration, when in fact Obama was elected president in 2008 and became president in January 2009.

The deficit spending from 2009-present has all occurred on Obama's watch. 8)

Deficits for 2009 were under Bush's budget. The first quarter of the 2009 federal fiscal year was already over before Obama was sworn in.

Actually no. When Obama took office in Jan. 2009 he asked for a supplementary budget bill, extra money for Fannie and Freddie, the stimulus bill, and extra money for his surge into Afghanistan. These four measures exploded the deficit. The great majority of the deficit in 2009 is due to Obama's extra spending.

Also its illogical to pretend that the first year of the Obama administration was somehow the 9th year year of the Bush administration.

The budget shifted to deficits during Bush's first year 2001 and no one claims those deficits belong to Clinton.

If Ds are going to claim that Bush owns the deficits from 2001 to 2009, then you are assigning 9 years of deficit to Bush, leaving only 7 for Obama.

Obama more than tripled the deficit during his first year in office in 2009

And the deficit went way up because revenues were way down because the economy collapsed in 2008.

Also, when Obama requested a stimulus (which Romney had been demanding also) the GOP insisted that 1/3 of the stimulus be more tax cuts.

Every president has to meet challenges. As far as the 2008 recession goes, it was already ending when Obama took office. The official agency in charge of defining recessions says the 2008 recession was over by May 2009. Yup---GDP growth resumed and the recession was officially OVER just months after Obama took office.

Nonetheless Obama choose to spend spend spend spend and as a result Obama created astronomical deficits. This was disasterous for the recovery. Obama's huge deficits sucked all the money out of the private sector, and helped create the slow-growth jobless recovery that has characterized the US economy since Obama became president.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the debt during the next 8 months, when there is no debt limit.

(Yup....the new bill reopening the goverment put no limit on the amount of debt that Obama can create in the next three months).

Wow!

The US debt just jumped 378 billion in one day!

Today is the first day the US can borrow more money since the debt limit was ended, and Obama really outdid himself. 378 BILLION in one day!!!! We are now over 17 TRILLION in debt.

At this rate during his 8 year term Obama will easily double all the debt that all the presidents before him created.

WOW!!!! US debt jumps 378 billion in one day!!!!

I thought the wing nuts in Congress were suppose to be bringing down the deficit? Maybe they'll think twice before pulling this stunt again. Na, I'm just kidding myself.

The next debate will be how to prevent the next round of the sequester cuts, which are mainly going to affect the Pentagon. The GOP is already saying they want to prevent those cuts by "entitlement reform," which means going after Social Security.

If the GOP want to shut down the government again, it'll be to demand cuts to Social Security.

Less then the Paul Ryan budget which also included deficits for the next several years. Remember, the House controls the purse.

Not now they don't.

A few months ago Obama was demanding that the debt limit be removed. Thats exactly what he got in the new budget bill. There is now no debt limit---leaving Obama free to boost the debt by 380 billion dollars just today.
