Some might beg to differ. In 2012 German aerospace research institution Bauhaus Luftfahrt released details of a concept for a zero-emissions 190-seat aircraft which could potentially enter service in 2035. Designated the Ce-Liner, the electric aircraft would rely on twin super-conducting electric motors supplied by a bank of up to 16 battery containers.

But at least the E-Fan does exist, and has flown :roll:

However, I have difficulty seeing electric planes taking over passenger and freight services that the big planes offer. Like electric cars these planes might fill a niche market for many years before the battery technology improves enough for the main stream - but by then the effects of PO may have severely limited mass air travel/air freight so a small electric plane may well serve the rich of the post PO period.
