So when is the PO Pearl Harbor?

General discussions of the systemic, societal and civilisational effects of depletion.

So when is the PO Pearl Harbor?

So?
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

"Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off. When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, 'Was there ever a city like this great city?' They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out:
" 'Woe! Woe, O great city,
where all who had ships on the sea
became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!"

There's my annual revelations quote. That dude was on some powerful trip when he wrote it. This thread looked like a good place to insert his timeless view. Enjoy! 8)

Let's all hope for peaceful settlement of these unfortunate matters rather than other actions.

Come on you goofs.

The question (in case I need to rephrase) is:

When will PO become a clarion cal to do more than tap on some message board?

Well that is a great question pops...for me the clarion call was about 5 years ago.

With the exception of reading here and learning more "things" my preps are staged and ready for the bone crushing thud.

5 years ago I posted not so much on sites like PO.com.

That won't ever happen in a positive way Pops. If you mean in the propagandistic fashion of the "US citizenry collectively gathering together in a noble and determined way to fight off the evil empire that had perpetrated such a heinious crime against an innocent nation."

The greedy few and the moronic masses of the United States will murder whoever gets in the way of their next gallon of gas. And then it will get worse until they turn on each other. Oh wait! they do that now.

I don't foresee most people waking up to any clarion call, Pops. I think most people will just limp along, struggling to make ends meet while desperately clinging to their old way life until it becomes obvious that their old way of life is no more. And at that point it will be too late to do anything other than cope.

Does that sound too doomeristic? Sorry, I was just out in the cold, gloomy rain with my dogs and I haven't quite warmed up yet. :)

This may occur when TPTB are scared that they might not have enough fuel to carry out an attack in the future?

Yea, I’m kinda thinking along the same lines, except I have had a couple of conversations lately with my nephew re: global warming.

Makes me wonder why that strikes a cord and PO hasn’t.

Pops,

I believe it will take a presidential acknowledgement that peak oil has come and gone and the future is all downhill. We won't get such an acknowledgement until it is totally undeniable. That means at least six years of steady decline in world oil production. It'll probably be a president in his second term, not one looking for reelection. That means, don't look for it in the next four years. Maybe after that.

And what will the response to that clarion call be? Most likely it will start out with more of the same: DRILL THE ANWR!! RAPE THE ROCKIES FOR PATRIOTISM!!!

I think we are already seeing the grassroots peak oil movement. After all, many progressive cities, such as Portland OR, have adopted peak oil protocols. Such things will grow slowly. I don't know if there will be any "moment."

Dunno....but its been awhile, and I was sure under the impression something bad was supposed to happen by now.....maybe we have to wait till we have both PO and peak natural gas and coal first?

Widespread and frequent gasoline shortages will probably be needed to wake most people up. You can then show them the Jimmy Carter message to the nation (which year was that?).

Jimmy Carter administration, I was told, prevented natrual gas use for electricty generation.

But then again, the Carter adminstration haS some problems with the origin of the Iraq/Iran war?

Pipelines going below the MOL will do the job. No oil gets to refineries, emergency plans hastily drawn up to ship enough there by other means which won't do the job, lack of oil at refineries = no gas/diesel to stations = SHTF.

Dantes is saying this will likely go down next year. What will Bush say? "This is, uh...it's...it's, uh, a day, which will, uh, live in, uh, infamy..."
