Canada Lac-Mégantic Rail Disaster: $200 Million Settlement

Unread postby pasttense » Sat 10 Jan 2015, 11:06:04

A U.S. lawyer who worked on the wrongful-death lawsuits said Friday that $200 million will be distributed in settlement funds to families of those who died as well as other parties involved in the legal battle.

Peter Flowers told The Canadian Press he expects the money to start flowing this summer, although the compensation package must still be approved by courts on both sides of the border.

The settlement involves the Montreal Maine & Atlantic Canada Co., its insurance carrier, railcar manufacturers and some oil producers.

Good news as railroad went bankrupt and I expected inadequate insurance coverage.

We need more such settlements in corporate abuse cases. Unfortunately, most of the time the hordes of corporate lawyers can whittle down settlements to paltry amounts through appeals.

There needs to statutory law limiting appeal rights in such cases. Some freaking appeal judge should not be able to reduce a jury rendered judgement. Either the company is guilty or it is not. Why in hell does an appellate court get to revise judgements for frivolous reasons?
