It is hard to judge these things. After years of GMO scare stories by the ANTI crowd they might be over selling a bit as a kind of compensation.

Corn turning French hamsters into deranged cannibals

A diet of corn is turning wild hamsters in northeastern France into deranged cannibals that devour their offspring, alarmed researchers have reported.

"There's clearly an imbalance," Gerard Baumgart, President of the Research Centre for Environmental Protection in Alsace, and an expert on the European hamster, told AFP on Friday.

"Our hamster habitat is collapsing."

The findings, reported last week in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society of London B, finger industrial-scale monoculture as the culprit.

Once nourished by a variety of grains, roots and insects, the burrowing rodents live today in a semi-sterile and unbroken ocean of industrially grown maize, or corn.

The monotonous diet is leaving the animals starving, scientists discovered almost by accident.

The problem is a lack of vitamins. In fact, one in particular: B3, or niacin.

A first set of lab experiments with wild specimens compared wheat and corn-based diets, with side dishes of clover or worms.

There was virtually no difference in the number of pups born, or the basic nutritional value of the different menus.

But when it came to survival rates, the difference was dramatic.

About four-fifths of the pups born of mothers feasting on wheat-and-clover or wheat-and-worms were weaned.

Only five percent, however, of the baby hamsters whose mothers ate corn instead of wheat made it that far.

What was most disturbing is how they perished.
"Females stored their pups with their hoards of maize before eating them," the scientists reported. "Pups were still alive at that time."

The cannibal mothers showed other signs of abnormality.

The usually cute-and-cuddly hamsters ran in circles, "climbing and pounding their feeders," when scientists entered the room.

The researchers recognised the symptoms, and had a hunch as to what was causing them.

Vitamin B3 deficiency has been linked to 'black-tongue' syndrome in dogs, and a condition in humans called pellagra, also known as the "3-D" disease: diarrhoea, dementia and dermatitis, such as eczema.

"Improperly cooked maize-based diets have been associated with higher rates of homicide, suicide and cannibalism in humans," the researchers note.

"Monoculture in agriculture is really bad for biodiversity,"

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Princess Anne may have sparked some royal sibling rivalry after saying genetically modified crops had real benefits to offer, putting her at odds with her older brother Charles who says they would be an environmental disaster.

In an interview with BBC radio, Anne said she would grow GMO crops on her farming estates, adding she doubted that the technology had many downsides.

That view contrasts sharply with that of heir-to-the-throne Charles, who has long been an ardent campaigner for organic produce, once warning the widespread use of GM crops would "cause the biggest disaster environmentally of all time".

"GM is one of those things that divides people," Anne, whose title is the Princess Royal, told the BBC's "Farming Today" program.

"Surely if we are going to be better at producing food of the right value, then we have to accept that genetic technology ... is going to be part of that," she said in the interview to be aired on Thursday.

European Union laws strictly control the use and authorization to grow GM organisms, but last October environment minister George Eustice said the British government was considering "possible future arrangements" for the regulation of GM organisms after Britain leaves the bloc.

Asked if she would use GM for crops and livestock on her own farming lands in Gloucestershire, western England, should the law allow, the 66-year-old daughter of Queen Elizabeth replied "Yes".

"To say we mustn't go there 'just in case' is probably not a practical argument," she said. "I do think ... gene technology has got real benefits to offer, which will have maybe an occasional downside, but I suspect not very many."

Anne's attitude toward GM crops has long differed from that of Charles, patron of the Soil Association which campaigns against the use of GM produce.

In a newspaper interview in 2008 Charles said multinational food companies were conducting a "gigantic experiment with nature and the whole of humanity which has gone seriously wrong".

Vegetables, grains, and meats all play a part in healthy human diets, we are omnivores.

ANY crop which has been bred for desireable traits for hundreds or thousands of years, is genetically modified. That it happened via prolonged unnatural selection rather than in a laboratory does not make one plant safer than another.

I discovered the taste of artisan breads made with ancient grains a few years back. It was a revelation to me. A typical supermarket bread loaf lists over 50 ingredients, covered by a bag of petrocehemical plastic film. Artisan breads typically have 5-6 ingredients.

Boy if I could sell beeves for $2800 a piece I'd go back into the business. Even all cut and wrapped ready for the freezer that's a pretty stiff price. By contrast live grass fed beef ready for slaughter are going for $1.35 a pound live weight in the USA Midwest farm belt.
