US energy department rebrands gas exports ‘molecules of freedom’

US energy officials appeared to rebrand natural gas produced in the country as “freedom gas”, in a statement announcing an increase in exports.

The US Department of Energy said the expansion of a Texas facility meant more “molecules of US freedom” could be produced and exported worldwide.

The facility, based in Quintana, produces liquified natural gas (LNG).

The move was a clear indication of US commitment to promoting clean energy, the statement said.

But the rebranding comes amid a Trump administration push to roll back climate change legislation introduced by Mr Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, which targeted vehicle emissions.

Shortly after taking office, Mr Trump announced the US would withdraw from the 2015 Paris climate change agreement, saying that he wanted to negotiate a new “fair” deal that would not disadvantage US businesses and workers.

The move was decried by climate change scientists and campaigners, and Mr Trump has faced accusations of hampering global efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Wednesday’s announced expansion of the facility on Quintana Island will support some 3,000 new jobs in the area, according to the Department of Energy statement.

“Increasing export capacity from the Freeport LNG project is critical to spreading freedom gas throughout the world by giving America’s allies a diverse and affordable source of clean energy,” Mark Menezes, the US undersecretary of energy, said.

The term freedom gas is reminiscent of freedom fries, coined in the US 2003 as an alternative to French fries following France’s opposition to the US invasion of Iraq.

Republican congressman Walter B Jones and his fellow Republican Robert W Ney also pushed for cafeterias in the House of Representatives to rename their French toast “freedom toast”.

The approximate annual net revenue to the US LTO industry from its 3MM BOPD of exports just about covers its approximate annual interest expense on $300bn of long term debt. That export revenue cannot be used to deleverage debt, replace reserves, or grow production rates. In fact, the LTO industry is still outspending revenue to be able to export that 3MM BOPD: https://www.rystadenergy.com/newsevents/news/press-releases/Just-10-percent-of-shale-oil-companies-are-cash-flow-positive/

As most of these exports come from the Permian we should not discount the approximate 1 BCF of associated gas getting pissed up a flare stack, wasted forever, nor the 1 billion barrels of fresh water being used to frac those wells, whose oil production then gets exported.

The United States is the largest oil consumer in the world. Granted, the shale oil phenomena the past decade has proven that “reserves” no longer need to be economical to recover. Still, wild ass guesses of 50,60,70G BO of recoverable reserves in the US are nuts. 302,000 more shale oil wells, for instance, will cost somebody, the American tax payer most likely, well over $3t. The 1975 Energy Policy and Conservation Act banning exports was signed into law for a reason. Those same reasons for prohibiting exports then, exist today…x 100.

Exporting America’s last remaining oil resources away, extracted on credit, is not free enterprise, nor capitalism, nor smart long term energy policy. Its stupid.

Saturday evening here in the land of eternal summer. There is a gentle rain outside after a nice sunny, tropical day. Enjoying some locally made palm wine and a nice big blue marlin steak from the fish market. Total cost ~$2.

We are into June and the kids will be returning to school. Our caretaker’s son will be starting college. Our support will be about $250 per year for four years. (Total cost) His sister graduated last year with a degree in business. He is thinking about a degree in engineering. His parents never finished high school. School is an option here, not a legal requirement.

Our 73 year old neighbor has been in the hospital for a month to cure his pneumonia and TB. He has no income so the government pays for it. His family only has to pay for the meds. We are taking care of his two dogs while he is away.

Such is life in the Philippines. Laid back and free. Have a great day! ^_^

BTW: They can call it anything they want, even Heaven’s Raindrops, but it is still overpriced FFs. Doomed to fail. Copy of the old “Freedom Fries”? It’s fun watching the US implode…from a seat 8,000 miles away. LOL
