Russian Gas Mega-Pipeline To China Goes Online As Putin & Xi Hail Closer Ties

Russian Gas Mega-Pipeline To China Goes Online As Putin & Xi Hail Closer Ties thumbnail

Late Monday Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin jointly launched the major unprecedented cooperative project that had been years in the making called the ‘Power of Siberia’ gas pipeline.

The China-Russia east-route pipeline is now providing China with Russian natural gas, which according to Chinese state media is expected to reach 5 billion cubic meters in 2020 and increase to 38 billion cubic meters annually from 2024.

Crucially, S&P Global Platts estimates that total sales through the pipeline is projected to meet nearly 10% of China’s entire gas supply by 2022, ensuring vital energy security as Beijing continues to feel the pressure and uncertainty of the trade war with Washington.

The ceremony to officially bring the pipeline online was held as a video call between Xi and Putin was underway. Xi told Putin: “The East-route natural gas pipeline is a landmark project of China-Russia energy cooperation and a paradigm of deep convergence of both countries’ interests and win-win cooperation.”

The deal had been cemented in May 2014 when Russian gas giant Gazprom signed a 30-year contract with China National Petroleum Corp, after which the pipeline agreements were signed with both leaders present in Shanghai in later 2014.

Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller announced to both leaders that the pipeline had been opened via video link. “Gas is flowing to the gas transmission system of the People’s Republic of China,” he said.

A 30-year deal was signed by Putin and Xi in 2014, and while a final figure has not been announced, it is believed to be worth more than $400 billion. — CNN

Gazprom will oversee operation of the mammoth pipeline which runs more than 8,100 kilometers (5,000 miles) across the two countries.

Xi hailed the pipeline’s inauguration as signaling a new start in future China-Russian cooperation and partnerships. And as Putin noted in his comments, the pipeline’s launch date coincided with the 70th anniversary of Russia-China diplomatic ties.

Putin also projected that 1 trillion cubic meters of natural gas will flow through the pipeline from Russia over the next 30 years.

The pipeline crosses over to China from Russia’s Blagoveshchensk, also site of the first major road bridge between the two.

“That step brings the Russian-Chinese strategic partnership in the energy sector to a whole new level,” Putin stated to TASS news agency.

In a worrisome sign for Washington as Moscow further cements its energy dominance in the east, the ‘Power of Siberia’ is but the first of a planned for three total major pipeline projects. It will later be joined by ‘TurkStream’ and ‘Nordstream2’, according to official statements.

Global Research is more credible with its news articles. It is not corporate run (It is funded by public donations).

Good for Russia. It needs to diversify away from the EU and its endless blackmail. The EU needs to learn what it is like in the real world. Buy the LNG and STFU.

After three says of riding out the typhoon that crossed the Philippines, with the major power lines down to our area for 56 hours, it is good to see that things are progressing well for the Russia/China team and not so well for the West.

While the typhoon’s eye passed several hundred miles south of us, we had a day of heavy winds and gusts and then a day of heavy rains, but the temps were in the 70s instead of the 80s. A plus.

That some trees took down the lines is not unusual. Most of the lines travel thru what Amerikans would call a jungle and up and over several mountains. An area of several hundred square miles was blacked out.

My sister in PA has similar power outages during storms, the most recent on Thanksgiving Day, and she is in a supposed 1st world country (15 miles from the US Army War College) but not really. The US is more 3rd world every day.

One thing most here can agree, we need to stop
poisoning our air burning coal. Coal burning to produce electricity is madness. China really is making a huge effort to build power plants that burn BOTH coal and NG. When Russian gas
reaches deep inside China coal will be payzed out.

“When Russian gas reaches deep inside China coal will be payzed out.”

LOL, bobby, what about all the coal plants China is building elsewhere? Is Russian gas going to reach that far? Chinese are not going to phase out coal like your simpleton thinking.

(Production) Rate cuts continued till March (2020)
OPEC, for what it’s worth, will continue to produce at lower levels. WHEN this news filters down, WTI should close slightly above $59.

March begins higher consumption in Northern Hemi.

Down and dirty. Almost no oil company can make profit below $50. The only alternative in that case,
close the doors. A steady, PROLONGED $60 will bring some stability… until march.

The newly-elected Ukrainian president will meet Putin, Macron and Merkel today:

The jewish-comedian-turned-president Selensky has weak cards. America is too much absorbed by the impeachment circus, Merkel’s aura is rapidly diminishing and Macron wants to improve EU-relations with Russia and has little patience with Ukrainian concerns.

On top of that, in January Nord-Stream-II will come online and at the same time the old Ukrainian transit contract for Russian natural gas to the EU expires, potentially depriving Ukraine from desperately needed billions. Selensky has VERY weak cards.

At home in Kiev, the old guard is afraid that Selensky will make too many concessions to Russia over Donbass. He already showed signs that he really wants peace by withdrawing his troops from the front-line.

Europe and Russia have great interest in getting the matter settled, either with Donbass independence or a special autonomous status within the Ukraine and Europe can finally lift anti-Russian sanctions, basically imposed by the neocon-ruled-US, “under” Obama.

    Pictures from Kiev, last Saturday:

Nationalist Ukrainians (are there any fear that Selensky will make concessions today. They want Ukraine in NATO and EU, but keep Russia out. They deeply distrust Macron and Merkel and most of all Putin.

    They should.

Ukraine AND Russia are going to be part of Europe, in order to build a West-Eurasian block as a counter-weight for China.

Dirt-poor and powerless Ukraine will not be allowed to piss in the PBM soup.

Orthodox Ukrainians should realize that their position is BETWEEN the non-orthodox EU and very orthodox Russia. That’s the meaning of the name Ukraine: “Borderland”.
