Iran Warns US Against Seizing Oil Tanker

Public Policy

Iran warned the U.S. against apprehending a supertanker carrying the Middle East country’s oil, leaving the fate of the vessel uncertain as it sailed east into the Mediterranean Sea from Gibraltar, where it been detained since last month.

The tanker, formerly called the Grace 1 and now known as the Adrian Darya 1, was signaling — at least for now — Kalamata, Greece, with an arrival date of Aug. 25, tanker-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg at 11:30 a.m. London time show.

It left Gibraltar Sunday night after being detained there since early July, when British forces seized it on suspicion of carrying oil to Syria in violation of European sanctions. The U.S., which has sanctions against Iran, is seeking to prevent anyone from doing business with the ship.

“The U.S. surely can’t seize the Iranian tanker and, if it does, it would pose a threat to international maritime security,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said. Iran warned the U.S. via “diplomatic channels,” including Switzerland, against interfering with the tanker, in international waters, Mousavi said at a news conference in Tehran. Swiss diplomats serve as interlocutors between the U.S. and Iran.

The incident is one of several in recent months that have strained relations between Iran and the West, following the U.S. reinstatement of sanctions on the Persian Gulf state last year. Iran has maintained that the ship’s original detention on July 4 was unlawful. The Persian Gulf state continues to hold a U.K.-flagged tanker, the Stena Impero. Aggression in the region has threatened shipping in recent months in the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most critical waterway for oil supplies.

Destination Unclear

It’s not known where the Iranian vessel is ultimately headed. The port of Kalamata can’t handle vessels the size of the supertanker and no refueling facilities are available, Gyannoula Nikolaous, the port’s acting harbor master, said by phone. In addition, the port hasn’t been informed of the ship’s intention to arrive there, he said.

Greek authorities also haven’t received formal notification that the vessel intends to head to a port in the country, according to a spokesman for Greece’s coast guard. Kalamata’s port usually serves pleasure craft like sailboats and cruise ships, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

The waters off Kalamata could be a possible location for ship-to-ship cargo transfers, according to two vessel brokers without specific information about the tanker’s plans. A ship’s destination is entered manually into the its Automatic Identification System, and is picked up by vessel-tracking. The destinations can be altered multiple times on the same journey.

U.S. Complaint

Gibraltar rejected an attempt by the U.S. to block the Iranian supertanker on Sunday, saying that EU regulations don’t allow it to seek a court order to detain the vessel.

A complaint unsealed in Washington stated that “Oil Tanker ‘Grace 1,’ all petroleum aboard it and $995,000 are subject to forfeiture,” according to a Justice Department statement. The statement alleges a “scheme to unlawfully access the U.S. financial system to support illicit shipments” of oil from Iran to Syria in violation of U.S. sanctions, money laundering and terrorism statutes.

Gibraltar last week released the vessel, after the government said Iran had provided assurances that the ship would not sail to a destination sanctioned by the EU. In response, the U.S. said it was gravely disappointed with Britain, and it warned that ports, banks and anyone else who does business with the vessel or its crew might be subject to sanctions, according to two administration officials.

    Here come the drones;

Dr. Gary N. Ross: Complacency! Major Saudi oil field attacked by Houthis/Iran using ten drones and no mention in hard copy of some major newspapers Monday editions (eg NYTIMES)
The question I have is what type of drones are they using?

Commercial off the shelf components allow someone to put together a remote control drone – but it would require a radio link to control it. If there is phone (cell phone) coverage with 4G most of the area, then they could control it by putting a couple of cell phones on the plane that are connected by USB to a small computer on the drone. The cell phone companies have made it easy to create Apps. A small amount of proficiency with Java is all someone would need to create an interface from the cell phone to a commercially available remote control apparatus that are sold for various types of drones that are commercially available.

This capability is something I have been worried about – because all you need are a few technically proficient people to create a remote control drone.

On the other hand, they would need a large drone in order to contain the fuel needed to reach 500 km. But it would be doable. There are many people in the USA that could make a commercially available drone controllable by a cell phone in a few weeks. To make a long range one would be something harder as commercial drones lack that long of a range nor are the able to carry that much fuel. So, what is needed is a large fuel efficient drone that can carry a bomb.

The other way to control drones is via satellite. A much harder method is to create software that control a drone along a flight path programmed into the drone. But with GPS, it is something that would take a dozen experienced software engineers a few months. The drone would follow the flight path and use the GPS in order to determine current location.

The limitation of remote control drones is that all that is needed is to transmit a strong interfering RF signal such that the radio loses it’s connection and the drones crash. Or for a GPS signal, just spoof the signal such that the location that is detected is wrong.

Given that most of the difficult control issues have already been handled by toy companies for drones and cell phone companies for phones, it is not that technically difficult to have a remote controlled drone that Iran could use to attack someone. (30)

Ten drones strike Saudi oil field!

Maybe it just doesn’t matter any longer.
No one here seems to give a shit.

The only reason why the US hates Iran is because the Iranians took back their country and kicked out the Shah (who was put there by the CIA-MI5). Iran is a sovereign nation, not a US colony.

A US military MQ-9 drone has been shot down in Yemen’s Dhamar governate, south-east of the Houthi-controlled capital Sana’a, two US officials have said.

A Houthi military spokesman had earlier said that air defences had brought down a US drone.

The officials, speaking on Wednesday on condition of anonymity, said the drone was shot down late on Tuesday.

It is not the first time a US drone has been shot down in Yemen. In June, the US military said Houthi rebels had brought down a US government-operated drone with assistance from Iran.

US forces have occasionally launched drone and air strikes against the Yemen branch of al-Qaida, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

One of the officials said it appeared the drone had been shot down by a surface-to-air missile operated by the Iran-aligned Houthi group. The other official cautioned that it was too early to tell who was responsible for the incident.

The downing of the drone comes amid rising tensions between Iran and the US after Donald Trump’s administration withdrew last year from an international deal to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions and imposed sanctions.

The Us is hypocritical- they sell weapons to other countries but don’t care when civilians get killed or maimed by US-backed dictatorships.

The US has been actively assisting Saudi Arabia for going on six years bombing Yemen.

I’m guessing Yemen is already a full blown proxy war.
Iran using local tribes people to fight KSA and US forces.

Was this a sacrafical lamb sent to be shot down?
    Or, A ‘lucky hit’?

Trump needs Casus Belli to wipe out Yemen resistance.
Will a drone shoot down do the trick?

” Trade wars, ME wars, are easy to win.”

My advice to US Marines deployed in Yemen.
Bring your own water and everything else.

  30. Robert Inget on Wed, 21st Aug 2019 10:50 am

If Saudi Arabia’s oil fields are slowly petering out, this puts an entire new political geopolitical stamp on ME wars.

IOW’s were they ever worth the trouble?
    Are they today.
Afghanistan, after 18 years of US warfare looks like it will fall back into ISS and Taliban hands. (once US troops depart)
    Iraq, backing Iran.

Now, a last ditch attack on Yemen and or Iran to support a fading Saudi Arabian oil state.

Trump is a liar, psychopath and a hypocrite.

  33. Robert Inget on Wed, 21st Aug 2019 12:07 pm

Bi now, most of us know that Richard.

It’s that 40% of Americans that don’t care a hoot
about Trump’s faults. They even love him all the more for his rants.

Back in the 1930’s President Roosevelt managed to take dozens of diverse groups to combine into what has become known as the ‘Democratic Coalition’.

President Trump seems to be doing the reverse.
He still believes his voters are stupid and will believe his lies.
They aren’t stupid and they’ve stopped believing most, if not all Trump’s tall stories. Most of all his voters are watching their pocket-books. Trump can kidnap all the Central American children in the world as long as wages/employment improve. WHEN lay-offs come due to Trump’s Trade Wars, slowly but surly, support will fade.

  35. DerHundistLos on Wed, 21st Aug 2019 1:31 pm

The good news is 40% support will not win re-election for Pres. Chump. The Midterm election results were just a taste of what’s to come in next year’s general election.
