Even a 6 dollars a gallon most Americans will still refuse to accept reality. Those unable to afford gasoline will take it unlawfully from their neighbors through theft. That is what happens in a country that has expensive gasoline.

If the oil crisis were to get worst and make people wake up. The Global Warming thing would take care of itself. Remember when the 9-11 situation happened? All the aircraft were banned from American skies and the air actually got cleaner during that ban. So, if there are less people driving and flying, there has to be a decline in pollution over time.

@Dusko: I think you’re incorrect – theft may increase slightly but the vast vast majority of people and amount of change would come from Americans just using less fuel. At $4/gallon there was clear evidence of people driving less to deal with the cost. A much more interesting discussion would be how this would affect American society.

@James: Undoubtedly less driving and flying will reduce pollution. I’m from the UK and remember the positive effects the Icelandic ash cloud last year when it grounded all flights for a week. Shame this one isn’t as big!

How much of the denial can be contributed to the Koch brothers and their funding?

People tend to think very short term opting for saving a dollar today vs saving 5 or 10 dollars over five years for something that is more energy efficient.
