I think he summed up the complete picture of the current situation in these six minutes.

its not just peak oil we should be worrying about, climate change is destroying agriculture, the rising seas will displace millions along coastal areas, we also have a weak economy that is very vulnerable to supply disruptions as he said that would plunge us into a deep depression, followed by collapse, politicians just argue over stupid things and ignore scientists who try and warn them, start to grow your own food for sure, especially beans and winter squash (high nutrient and stores well), you never know when you will need it.

Over population is the elephant in the room.

Too many people and too few resources.

Access to family planning services needs to be available to all that want it.

Overpopulation was caused by our exploitation of fossil fuels. Fossil fuel use is the “elephant in the room”. The population problem will be taken care of as we run out of fossil fuels.

Start planning for your own future now, while you still have the opportunity. No one else is going to do it for you.

Note for future life with family on small farm …

Number one requirement is a solid means of defence. Firearms and ammunition. If you don’t have them, others will.

    FarQ3,

Yes, but don’t forget, strength in numbers. Know your neighbours and get involved in your local community.

FarQ3 & GregT: I think you’re both on to something. A kind word and an M-14 get you far more than a kind word alone. But in the future, we will also need close communities in order to survive. But also consider where you’ll build those communities. Kunstler’s all for small intergrated towns, and I think that’s a good bet. But a small, intergrated community in Texas won’t do so well when climate change sinks it’s teeth in and farm land turns to dust. Nor will things go so well in more urban areas. My money (literally ’cause that’s where I live)is on rural Ontario. Thanks to CO2, our growing seasons are getting longer and we have a low population density.

    Hugh,

Rural BC for me. The last 5 years should be a pretty good indicator of where we are headed. The question is, how long will it take? If current trends continue, I don’t think that being anywhere near a large population centre will be a good idea within 10 years. I hope I’m wrong, but I really don’t think so.
