THE Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Thread Pt. 8

Do you remember the 350 initiative? Looks like we blew past that without slowing down at all.

Here, let me fix that for you.

You are one person out of 7 billion on one planet that is the only one you are ever going to have and that the species depends on for its survival.

The 350 initiative came out when we were already around 380. Their whole concept was for humanity to go carbon negative until we got back down to 350. 350 was believed to have been the peak in any interglacial over the last 3 million years. Therefore they proposed that 350 was the "safe" maximum level of atmospheric CO2 to avoid major climate impacts.

The only reductions in rate you are seeing is the "noise" in the statistical record. A week or even a month here or there gives a hopeful sign, but the vast preponderance of the data shows a steadily increasing rate of CO2 accumulation.

"Global emissions almost back to pre-pandemic levels after unprecedented drop in 2020, new analysis shows"
https://theconversation.com/global-emis ... ows-170866

"Global carbon dioxide emissions have bounced back after COVID-19 restrictions and are likely to reach close to pre-pandemic levels this year, our analysis released today has found.

The troubling finding comes as the COP26 climate talks continue in Glasgow in a last-ditch bid to keep dangerous global warming at bay. The analysis was undertaken by the Global Carbon Project, a consortium of scientists from around the world who produce, collect and analyse global greenhouse gas information.

The fast recovery in CO₂ emissions, following last year’s sharp drop, should come as no surprise. The world’s strong economic rebound has created a surge in demand for energy, and the global energy system is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels."
