‘Historic’ storm hurls huge waves and 191-mph winds at Hawaii; rare snow hits Maui

An extremely powerful winter storm is pulling away from Hawaii after unleashing damaging winds, massive waves, coastal flooding and snow in unusual places.

The storm, which the National Weather Service office in Honolulu described as “historic,” began pounding the islands Friday. Hawaii News Now reported a 66-year-old California man died in the rough surf off northwest Maui on Friday.

Forecasters “are calling this an unprecedented event and we concur that we rarely if ever have seen the combination of record high onshore waves, coupled with gale force winds,” said Sam Lemmo, administrator of Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR).

The storm’s most extreme blow was generated on the Big Island’s towering peak of Mauna Kea, where a 191-mph wind gust blasted the mountain summit at 4:40 p.m. local time Sunday.

“That’s the strongest wind gust I’ve ever seen up there,” said Jon Jelsema, senior forecaster at the Weather Service office in Honolulu. “We tend to get a gust maybe to 150 mph once a winter or so, but never 191 mph.” ...

As Johnny Carson quipped many many years ago, California has 3 seasons, FIRE, RAIN and MUD. But what did Johnny know, this is all caused by climate change, never happened before, right?

Waves of heavy rain pounded California on Thursday, trapping people in floodwaters, washing away a mountain highway, triggering a mudslide that destroyed homes and forcing residents to flee communities scorched by wildfires last year.

At least two people died as the powerful system swept in from the Pacific Ocean and unleashed damaging rain, snow and wind.

The system was moving across the U.S. West into Wyoming and Colorado after walloping Northern California and southern Oregon a day earlier.

The National Weather Service reported staggering rainfall amounts across California, including more than 24 centimetres over 48 hours at one location in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles.

Nearly 37 per cent of California had no level of drought or abnormal dryness, the U.S. Drought Monitor reported Thursday. About 10.5 per cent of the state was in moderate drought, just over 1.6 per cent was in severe drought.
The remainder was in the abnormally dry category. The numbers reflect data gathered up to Tuesday.

After so many years of drought and a prolonged wildfire season, I much preferred to be washed away!

It's reached 20.3 °C at Trawsgoed, Ceredigion making it the UK's warmest February day on record. It's also the first time we've recorded over 20 degrees in winter https://twitter.com/metoffice/status/11 ... 6498420738

I'm not familiar with UK weather. How much is the temperature anomaly from average?

I've never seen a late February as warm as it is presently here in NW England. This weekend I've done all the outside gardening chores I usually do in April. Blue skies, little wind and quite warm in the sun. Two weeks ago light snow and freezing.

It won't last though, end of this week the cold and wet from the North Atlantic is forecast to return.

Records broken again today.

It's the hottest winter day on record! Arid conditions spark HILL FIRES as Britain basks in 70F heat after Moroccan plume sends mercury soaring for second day in a row
Moroccan air brings UK's warmest winter day ever for second consecutive day as London hits 21.2C (70.2F)
Kew Gardens in West London is today's hotspot - beating 20.6C (68.5F) yesterday in Trawsgoed, West Wales
Tomorrow will be slightly cooler but still above average, before heavy showers are possible on Thursday
Friday will mark first day of meteorological spring and is expected to be mostly dry before wet weekend
