The Uninhabitable Earth

Famine, economic collapse, a sun that cooks us: What climate change could wreak — sooner than you think.

Reading now. So far this is my fave.

Our lungs need oxygen, but that is only a fraction of what we breathe. The fraction of carbon dioxide is growing: It just crossed 400 parts per million, and high-end estimates extrapolating from current trends suggest it will hit 1,000 ppm by 2100. At that concentration, compared to the air we breathe now, human cognitive ability declines by 21 percent.

This one is good also. Relating “fossil capitalism” to the Black Death.

But in the aftermath of the 2008 crash, a growing number of historians studying what they call “fossil capitalism” have begun to suggest that the entire history of swift economic growth, which began somewhat suddenly in the 18th century, is not the result of innovation or trade or the dynamics of global capitalism but simply our discovery of fossil fuels and all their raw power — a onetime injection of new “value” into a system that had previously been characterized by global subsistence living. Before fossil fuels, nobody lived better than their parents or grandparents or ancestors from 500 years before, except in the immediate aftermath of a great plague like the Black Death, which allowed the lucky survivors to gobble up the resources liberated by mass graves. After we’ve burned all the fossil fuels, these scholars suggest, perhaps we will return to a “steady state” global economy. Of course, that onetime injection has a devastating long-term cost: climate change.

Yeah, that's pretty much what we've been saying around here for years.

That was a very amazing article from CNN.

First of all, it says clearly that the Paris Accords are a weaker agreement then the Kyoto Accords, which we already saw fail utterly to reduce CO2 emissions back in the day. Thats bad enough.

But then the lead negotiator for the US at the Paris Climate Accords openly admits in that CNN report that it was the Obama Administration that opposed binding limits on CO2 emissions at the Paris Accords. You'd think he'd be hiding his head in shame but instead he brazenly admits that he and the Obama administration are to blame for the lack of binding limits on CO2 emissions at Paris.

I am amazed. Did he not notice that CO2 emissions have been growing rapidly since the Paris Accords were ratified in late 2015? Does he not understand that increasing CO2 emissions means increasing global warming?

What exactly is wrong with putting limits on the amount of CO2 emissions? Why did Obama and the US delegation oppose limits on CO2 emissions? Ohmigosh...why are we cursed with such idiots as leaders????

Cheers!

150,000 people die each day. But CNN calls 400 deaths over a summer evidence of a climate crisis? Ridiculous. It's old news that the Obama administration opposed binding limits, it was the only way to get China and India on board. All the accords have been a shame and emissions will continue to go up as long as the world's population continues to go up.

Last year was warmest ever that didn’t feature an El Nino, report finds

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Last year was the warmest ever recorded on Earth that didn’t feature an El Niño, a periodic climatic event that warms the Pacific Ocean, according to the annual state of the climate report by 500 climate scientists from around the world, overseen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) and released by the American Meteorological Society.

Rising temperatures linked to increased suicide rates

Climate change cast a long shadow in 2017, with the planet experiencing soaring temperatures, retreating sea ice, a record high sea level, shrinking glaciers and the most destructive coral bleaching event on record.

Overall, 2017 was third warmest year on record, Noaa said, behind 2016 and 2015. Countries including Spain, Bulgaria, Mexico and Argentina all broke their annual high temperature records.

Puerto Madryn in Argentina reached 43.4C (110.12F), the warmest temperature ever recorded so far south in the world, while Turbat in Pakistan baked in 53.5C (128.3F), the global record temperature for May.

Concentrations of planet-warming carbon dioxide continued on an upward march, reaching 405 parts per million in the atmosphere. This is 2.2ppm greater than 2016 and is the highest level discernible in modern records, as well as ice cores that show CO2 levels back as far as 800,000 years. The growth rate of CO2 has quadrupled since the early 1960s.

The heat wave deaths aren't evidence of a climate crisis. They are the product of a climate crisis.

That isn't true. Both India and China had agreed to sign a much better UN Accord at the 2010 UN COP meeting in Copenhagen. But Obama screwed that up as well.
