World Grain Status (merged)

Re: World Grain Status (merged)

I was just commenting to my spouse this last weekend that the last time Europe experienced a real famine was 1945-46 and it has been even longer for North America. I think the next time we have an honest famine a lot of people are going to lose their marbles as they have no concept that such an event is even possible.
I should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, design a building, write, balance accounts, build a wall, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, pitch manure, program a computer, cook, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

I mentioned elsewhere that big acreage/harvests have already made grain cheap and by extension, meats, which are now piling up in storage due to tariffs as well.

Farmers to hold urgent summit over 'crippling impact' of heatwave
The National Farmers' Union demands swift action amid fears that crop supplies will be seriously affected.
UK,
Saturday 28 July 2018

Emergency talks on tackling the "tinderbox conditions" of the drought and water shortages are to be held in Whitehall, involving ministers, farmers' leaders and water company bosses.

The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has announced it plans to hold a "drought summit" next Wednesday to draw up an urgent action plan of measures to mitigate the "crippling impact" of the heatwave.

The summit comes amid fears that the heatwave could have a serious impact on the UK's food supply and after the Brexit secretary, Dominic Raab, admitted the government was taking steps to ensure there were "adequate" supplies in the event of a no-deal Brexit.......

Apparently less than half of the UKs food is domestic. I presume that is by monetary value.

Germanys Harvest lowest in 100 years up to minus 50%

If you are smart you now the last time it was so bad it was WAR time and Germany under Kaiser W. II .

Germany was much much bigger....

It was the "Steckrüben" Winter 1918 and millions go hungry.

=> When the "Kaiserreich" could not feed itself with slaves on the fields how could Germany in our days feed 80 millions + millions of refugess Frau Merkel?

Please explain it to the public with Global Warming burning our fields in Europe while y(our) CO2 reduction policy is a total disaster for the whole world.

German farmers step up $1 billion aid call after drought damage

HAMBURG (Reuters) - German farmers intensified calls for around 1 billion euros ($1.17 billion) in special aid on Tuesday after crop damage from a drought and heatwave, but Berlin said it would wait for an August harvest report before making a decision.

GBR/EU : FOOD CRISIS?!

AUGUST 2, 2018 / 8:09 AM / UPDATED 3 HOURS AGO
Heatwave ravages European fields, sending wheat prices soaring
PARIS/MOSCOW/HAMBURG (Reuters) - Searing heat has devastated wheat fields across northern Europe while a combination of dry conditions and extreme rain in the Black Sea have hit output estimates, with prices soaring on fears of further crop damage.

Evidence of serious harm to crops is growing as harvesting heads north in Germany, the European Union’s second largest wheat producer, and in Scandinavia, prompting further cuts to estimates for the 28-member bloc.

“The situation is catastrophic in northern Europe,” Strategie Grains head analyst Andree Defois said on Thursday.

The consultancy last week cut its forecast for this year’s soft wheat harvest in the EU, collectively the world’s largest wheat grower, below 130 million tonnes, a six-year low, and Defois said it could revise the estimate again.

France, the EU’s top producer, has also experienced extreme weather, prompting forecasters to cut their estimates to around 34 million tonnes from 36.6 million harvested last year.

Scandinavia and other Baltic states have also suffered, with Sweden’s wheat crop seen falling 40 percent while in Britain, where wheat crops are expected to fall to a five-year low, farmers are anxiously awaiting results as the harvest moves north.

“It’s far worse than we expected,” Sebastien Poncelet, analyst at Agritel said. “It has been months since it has rained in some parts of northern Europe and in Germany there should be no rain for at least another two weeks.”

As harvesting progressed north Agritel revised its estimate for the European all-wheat crop by 3 million tonnes in the past week to 136.6 million tonnes, down 15 million on year, Poncelet said.....

Well that might help USA grain prices to recover a bit. The traders don't seem to be too awfully concerned as of yet.
https://www.farmfutures.com/story-weekl ... ew-0-30768
Bullish hopes may seem surprising, given USDA’s July 12 monthly production, supply and demand report. After all, the government increased its projection of 2018 crop ending stocks by 39 million bushels, right in line with expectations I, and the rest of the trade, had. Moreover, the average cash price for the marketing year went down 10 cents, not exactly bullish material.

OK and thanks. Still a weak link to CC, no mention of population growth or increased exports.

Sounds like typical BAU narrow thinking to me.

Why Ravaging Heatwaves Matter to World’s Dinner Table
By Agnieszka De Sousa
14. August 2018, 08:12 MESZ

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... -quicktake

Why is wheat a political issue?
Bread prices have a long history of kickstarting unrest and political instability. For example, in 2010, Russia experienced a record heat wave that damaged the wheat crop. The government responded by banning exports to make sure consumers had enough supply. Wheat prices in international markets doubled in a matter of months, raising the price of bread for millions of people. During the food price spikes of 2011 and 2008, the world saw food riots in more than 30 nations across Africa, Asia and the Middle East....

Seriously, when you're going to call out people for being stupid, fine.

But then you should take a few seconds to proof read and spell "explain" correctly, or you look rather silly. (You have plenty of company in this regard).

It's like there's certain words one shouldn't misspell, like "genius", but people often misspell when sarcastically calling someone a genius. Karma or irony?
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

Crop damage mounts for EU farmers after torrid summer

August 23 2018 6:00 AM

European farmers are counting the cost of a summer heatwave that has shrunk cereal harvests and shrivelled pastures, leaving some farms struggling to survive and shutting the EU out of lucrative export markets.

The severe weather in Europe has coincided with adverse growing conditions in other major grain producing zones such as Russia and Australia, raising the risk that supplies in exporting countries will be eroded to their smallest in years.

The latest harvest estimates have underlined the impact of drought and heatwaves in northern Europe. Germany’s farmers’ association DBV on Wednesday forecast a 22 percent plunge in grain production this year in the European Union’s second-largest cereal grower.

SHRINKING EXPORT SUPPLY
A sharp drop in the EU’s wheat harvest will also limit exports from the bloc, adding to nervousness about global supply given weather issues elsewhere, including in top wheat exporter Russia.

Consultancy Agritel on Wednesday said it projected EU wheat exports, including durum, to fall to a seven-year low of around 21 million tonnes in 2018/19 as the bloc was set to see all-wheat production drop by some 15 million tonnes from last year.

Wheat gene map to help 'feed the world'
The starting pistol has been fired in a race to develop "climate change resistant" wheat with the publication of a map of the crop's genes.

An international team of scientists has identified the location of more than 100,000 wheat genes.
