Strange weather 2018

The scenes of flood waters coming into Boston area streets and freezing did remind me a bit of that movie, though this was inches rather than the tens of meters that the movie falsely depicts.

(Eventually will almost surely will get tens of meters, but not in one wave.)

Moscow has seen its heaviest snowfall in a day since records began, with more than 2,000 trees brought down and air travel disrupted, officials say.

More than half the monthly average snow fell on Saturday, beating the previous record set in 1957.

But we are seeing changes. So for sure it’s going fast, as climate goes.

Like folks bellyaching about the unprecedented cold on the East Coast. But if it’s so unusual why did they build ice harbors and why does the Delaware sailing directions talk about it being froze over?

Short memories we have.

Well, we humans being of a fragile composition do not need for the drastic shift in climate to endanger us. Just some freakish weather. Like for instance, a hurricane or tsunami or landslide or flooding. I think you get the picture

The polar vortex just split in two.

Get ready for some wild weather from Europe to the U.S.

I don’t what they mean by “split in two”. The 500mb level is very disorganized with a section extremely low, nearly at the equator.

It strikes me that this will lead to some varied weather, not easily predicted.

Actually a pretty dumb article. It could have included some illustrations and made reference as how these variations In the flow are related to green house gasses and AWG.

We've had below average temperatures here as well, normally a typical day would be around 7-9 degrees, but recently it's averaged about 5 or lower.
Lots of light snow, that is quite rare, we're expecting a cold March as well.

From the article and its temperature map re the US, I don't get it. It's called weather.

I am NOT denying AGW, or that the polar vortex effects weather, or that the polar vortex splitting is unusual. I'm just saying temperature variations are part of normal weather. Over the next week, here in central KY, it's forecast to be 70's 3 days, 60's, 3 days, and 51 1 day for the next week.

In my experience, "normal" weather here would have the 51 degree a nice warm day, a peek/hint that, yes, winter is really ending.

But after a 2016 winter with literally almost NO snow all winter, and a November that included a week of summer-like 90+ degree highs (now THAT was damn spooky), I think calling perfectly ordinary temperature variation events (i.e. weather) "wild" is more click-bait than actual news.

(I long for the days when credible news agencies primarily "read" the news, instead of making it into a profit center re pushing a political agenda to help sell advertising time/space).
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

The Beast from the east is approaching!

We're getting ready for some sub-zero temperatures next week. Not much in the way of snow, but just very cold and mainly dry for about a week or so.

Holy TOLEDO!

It is 70F outside right now, breaking the record set in 1930 of 67F be a more than adequate margin! The fact that it has been raining fairly steadily for 48 hours has also caused a lot of local flooding (again) as every bit of snow has now joined the rainwater in filling the storm systems all across the region.
I should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, design a building, write, balance accounts, build a wall, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, pitch manure, program a computer, cook, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

No kidding, broken records all around!

That was also where the temperature climbed to 70 degrees at 4:45 p.m., breaking the Feb. 20 record of 66 set in 1930.

Tuesday’s high temperature as measured at The Blade was 67 degrees at 5:30 p.m.

Temperature records also were set in Fort Wayne, Ind. (70 degrees), Cleveland (73), Akron-Canton (74), Mansfield and Youngstown (both 72), Columbus (77), Dayton (75), Zanesville, Ohio, and Pittsburgh (78), and Cincinnati (79). Detroit tied its record for the date, 63, set in 2016.

Temperatures reached 69 in Defiance, 72 in Lima, and 73 in Findlay as well, but official National Weather Service records are not kept for those cities.

Yeah, that's got the attention of quite a few folks!

“Wow, 77° in Vermont right now.
A reminder, it’s February. ”
https://mobile.twitter.com/ericholthaus ... 2133457921

“My plot doesn’t do it justice but the 595 dm “heat” ridge along the US Eastern Seaboard is in my opinion one of the most impressive weather records that I can ever recall in my lifetime. It takes incredibly warm air through the entire atmospheric column to support this feature.”

https://twitter.com/judah47/status/966422929377554432

This is super nerdy, but a testament to the truly weird weather pattern happening today across eastern North America.
595 dm heights = unusually high even for mid-summer.
It’s sort of like seeing a snowstorm in July. Completely out of character for the atmosphere.”

“Tuesday has been the warmest day ever recorded in the month of February for several cities in the eastern US, including:
Muncie, IN: 76F [24.4°C]
Zanesville, OH: 77F
Pittsburgh: 78F
Clarksburg, WV: 79F
Tampa, FL: 89F [31.7°C]”

“The warmest February morning on record? .... is practically everywhere in the East [U.S.].”

Meanwhile, lots of flooding parts of the US MidWest and South:

Widespread flooding hits US South and Midwest, excessive rain continues

Records have also been set in the Southeast. Atlanta and other locations in Georgia have seen both daily high and low records exceeded by two degrees or more, several days this week. Highs in the upper 70s and low 80s.

Our high yesterday, here in Western NC, was 76.8, which is a site record as long as I've been logging weather data (21 years); 2.7 F above my previous high record. The low overnight was 61.9; a more typical low for June here. Windows open; enjoying the breeze.

Severe cold weather expected in Western Europe over th enext few days .
This is anticipated to be every bit as cold as the 1947 & 1963 events.

Same here. I almost wore shorts to work today. The tree's here are starting to bud and the daffodils are flowering. It's February!?! I just noticed my pear tree is starting to bud. Last time it did this a frost killed all the blooms and I got no pears...Two years ago.

But I have already planted lettuce, spinach, and bunching onions :) I think I'll do Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Cabbage this weekend.

It’s not the records you should be paying attention to.

It’s the UNSTABILITY.

The dreidel is wobbling.

The outlook is for more wobbling, greater variation, less predictability.

A warm spell late winter followed by a cold spring is a grower's nightmare.
All the plants start to sprout thinking it's spring only to be killed off by a return to winter.
