I can relate to his "pointillism" when he says

We were always an Empire, and only became better at it over time. We were never truly self-governing. And, I sadly acknowledge at the end of an old year, the prospects for self-governance in this careening modern world have never been dimmer.

The British empire? The Bank of England in 1694 ? Before that ? It's easy to see how history is rewritten everyday, especially when your living in it.

They financed the expansion of the empire and still do. America appears more and more like an illusion when so many of the founding fathers were groomed by the empire itself. What could really go wrong in the end?
