There are plenty of others out there who would certainly be worse given the chance to rule (but that doesn't excuse the State from consolidating power and taking the interests of their corporate donors over the electorate, for example). Could we try a bit of nuance?
the state consolidates the power giving them the chance to rule according to their evil whims. It's the consolidation that's the problem and like any good self replicating meme it teaches its constituant parts ie people to never think about it. Tell them and they get mad. It's fascinating.
The internet removed the top down centralized states innate advantage. We all sense it but the meme stops bringing it to it logical conclusion.
Ie smash the nation states and reduce the size of the organizational grouping to smaller local groups. The thought that we Cant it just the instilled programming telling you we Cant.
Also advances in military tech has made large armies expensive battleships in an age of aircraft carriers as an analogy.
