15,000 Scientists Issue a “Warning to Humanity”

More than 15,000 scientists from 184 countries have issued a warning: Mankind must take immediate action to reverse the effects of climate change, deforestation and species extinction before it’s too late. The warning, issued by the Alliance of World Scientists and published in the journal Bioscience, comes on the 25th anniversary of a similar warning from the Union of Concerned Scientists that was titled “World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity”. The new letter, however, has 10 times as many scientists endorsing it. “On the 25th anniversary of their call, we look back at their warning and evaluate the human response by exploring available time-series data,” the paper reads. “Especially troubling is the current trajectory of potentially catastrophic climate change due to rising GHGs from burning fossil fuels (Hansen et al. 2013), deforestation (Keenan et al. 2015), and agricultural production—particularly from farming ruminants for meat consumption (Ripple

Shut up 15,000 scientists! .... don't ruin a good correction when you see one coming!

Goodness gracious, why would you want to warn an over populated species just when they will start down the pathway to correction? Geez, how short sighted.

Now the climate change denialists are going to have to believe there is a conspiracy involving 15,000 scientists who are being bribed with research grants to promote the "fake" climate change agenda. I guess that won't be too much of a problem for them!

I doubt they'll have to. These dire warnings rarely make it beyond the 24 hour news cycle.

This is what people are more interested in:

What struck me on reading this news today was that in order for the denialists to claim they know better than the consensus of all these scientists, because they intuitively "know" something, like "the planet is too big to be affected by people" or "it was cold at my house last winter" or whatever -- is just so arrogant (and IMO stupid) as to be almost beyond belief. That is of course, until I pause and look at how humanity behaves overall and then it's,
"never mind"!

When I see the phrases like control, manage, reduce, eliminate poverty, I see not science but social engineers at work. Communists and socialists who don't like the unfairness of life in general on the planet. Fortunate for us, that outside of a few bubbles, no one listens to them.

Cog,
If I recall correctly elsewhere you have stated you believe the Earth is warming due to human activity. Your only beef is that we should not interfere with the natural order?

Please confirm or correct.

Anyone who uses social media is a victim of social engineers at work!

I believe that humans are having some impact on earth warming. A very gradual warming whose impact on humans that may turn out not to be all that bad. And no we should not interfere in the process. Nature decides in a fair and impartial way who will live and who will die and I'm fine with that.

Here we go again. The people in charge are humans. And the 99% who shop at Walmart, drive their SUVs, or fly to Greece (ahem, Plant) are also to blame.

Captain Renault: Realizing the importance of the case, my men are rounding up twice the usual number of suspects and Bill Nye!

Billy Nye calls himself the science guy. The reality is he is a fraud with a BS in mechanical engineering and possesses no other degrees which would give me a reason to listen to him.

1). Science is a process, not a degree.

2). The type of audience Bill Nye is talking to as "the science guy" tends to be people with little formal scientific training, IMO, from watching him on Netflix. (And between his manner and lack of content, I didn't want to watch him. But I think that's because his audience needs to be "entertained" or they'll change the channel. That isn't Nye's fault, IMO). You can do basic science without a fancy degree. I did throughout my 16 year education, because thankfully, my county and college had an excellent science program.

3). Degrees establish credentials. So they're a sorting mechanism. After that, whether good science is done (or fraud, or mere paper pushing) is up to the individuals involved (and those who employee/supervise them to enforce standards) -- regardless of the degree (or none) in science.

Thomas Edison only went to school for a few months, was a paper boy and telegraph operator. He likely would have found Cog to be an idiot because Cog is more interested in stirring up conflict than having constructive discussions and solving problems.

Leonardo da Vinci, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, Benjamin Franklin , William Herschel, Caroline Herschel, Mary Somerville, Michael Faraday, Charles Darwin; just a few of many who either had no formal education or degrees in the areas they excelled in.

It is not just Climate change, a host of other environmental , economic and social breakdowns are occurring and set to get worse. But hey lets toast for the Correction as Ibon says. We are long overdue.

Seems the 15,000 letter was too much for even the venerable old climate mongers at CBC to swallow:

"There's a small percentage that loves the crisis narrative, and they just repeat it over and over to each other."

Ellis said he's "somewhat embarrassed" for his scientific colleagues who have rallied behind this warning, arguing that it mostly talks about negative trends and ignores the increasing wealth, health and well-being of human populations globally.

Yeah right and in the meantime the Science seems to suggest we have set in motion a Mass Extinction Event with AGW.

Not science Onlooker, only a suggestion from a few fringe scientists looking for cheap publicity for their studies. Humans have been around for 200,000 years or so. We survived at least two periods of extreme glaciation that scraped large portions of the northern continents into the ocean and two inter-glacial warming periods where sea levels rose over 400 ft, in that time the Mediterranean basin has flooded, asteroids have hit earth, massive volcanoes have erupted and we survived it all. Survived as a species without the benefit of any technology beyond that of the stone age. Now we are living during the long slow decline into another period of glaciation, might take 10-12 thousand years to get there but get there it will. No upward blip in temperature is going to lead to mankind's extinction, we have too much technology, and we inhabit almost the entire planet so large pockets of humanity will always exist at least until the next giant asteroid strike.
