Good article, I really like the Atlantic.
I have 3 grandsons who divide their free time between on-screen battle and a little later, I assume, on-screen sex.
My youngest grandson's first word was "bok"... X Box

But to show my own advanced age and maleness, my football coach told us to abstain from sex (of any kind) before the Big Game to make us more aggressive. I certainly notice a more passivity in the teen boys I meet.

From 1992 to 2014, the share of American men who reported masturbating in a given week doubled, to 54 percent, and the share of women more than tripled, to 26 percent. Easy access to porn is part of the story, of course; in 2014, 43 percent of men said they’d watched porn in the past week. The vibrator figures in, too—a major study 10 years ago found that just over half of adult women had used one, and by all indications it has only grown in popularity. (Makes, models, and features have definitely proliferated. If you don’t know your Fun Factory Bi Stronic Fusion pulsator from your Power Toyfriend, you can find them on Amazon, which has these and some 10,000 other options.)

I also understand that in Japan young people like to dress up as animated teddy bears in order to have sex...naked human body against another naked body is just too much like digital pornography so they have to animate the act.

Montquest for all his insights, flawed or not, never saw this coming.. .Either did Paul Ehrlich for that matter!

The removing of all pubic hair making your genitals infantile is also part of this story....

This discussion is reminding me of the concept of Neoteny that I remember learning about in evolutionary biology, the retention of juvenile or larval traits into adulthood and how this was an important mechansim of selective breeding in domestication.

Anyway, something about digitalization of our culture having the unintended consequence of selection for juvenile traits seems to resonate on some level especially if we consider pubic hair free sex coupled with the level of discourse you see in social media.

This degradation will continue.

On our game cameras today there was some footage of a big male Collared Peccary performing cunnilingus on a female. Apparently the wildlife in the cloud forest isn't affected by this loss of sexual appetite.

So many people take themselves and the world far too seriously and have forgotten how to play.

How did we become so boorish?

The trend has been there since the 60s —not the teddy bear trend, LOL—the decline in fertility

In '68 Ehrlich wrote about India and said they could never increase their food production in time to avoid starvation. But Borlaug had already developed his dwarf wheat and was even then importing seed to India. Harvests doubled in a few years. Ehrlich didn't make a mistake in seeing the problem, he was exactly right, he just didn't see the solutions—better wheat genetics in the short run and the dramatic effect of hormonal and other contraception under women's control in the long run.

Even though birth rates are down, half of young women don't use any contraception, mostly because they just aren't knowledgeable, still.
Only half of young women are currently using a hormonal or long-acting method, and a quarter of those in relationships are not using any medical method.

I thought this quote from Wikiversity was appropriate for discussion here.

loooong article

https://en.m.wikiversity.org/wiki/Limits_To_Growth

In recent years, estimates for deforestation and forest degradation were shown to account for 20-25% of greenhouse gas emissions, higher than the transportation sector. [37] Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is a set of steps designed to use market and financial incentives to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases from deforestation and forest degradation.
