Plug-in EV tax credit

Unread postby yesplease » Mon 06 Oct 2008, 12:19:16

The Senate bill would give buyers a base-line credit of $2,500 for buying a vehicle powered by a 4-kilowatt hour battery. An additional $417 would be added for each KWh of battery power beyond that up to a total limit of $7,500.

I didn't see anything about model year restrictions so I suppose if they're purchased after the bill was passed it could.

What could you buy this year to qualify? A NEV or a Tesla is about it.

A little Zenny for the wify. It's so cute!

EV Available Now

If we can get a $7500 tax rebate on it, that sweetens the deal considerably. I haven't seen cars rated by kilowatt hours before, though. It seems to come out of some definition from some electrical engineering association.

I'm not sure if NEVs or electric motorcycles are covered... A $3k Zenn would be an instant hit, but I doubt it's covered.

You're probably right. Typical American tax structure to give huge rebates to the biggest vehicles while screwing the little guy! [smilie=angryfire.gif]

The text is here, and I can't find anything that excludes smaller EVs like electric motorcycles and NEVs, but it just seems like there would be too many NEVs w/ 4+kWh packs going 50-75% off. If anything I suppose the best bet would be to get legal counsel before hand to see if it's viable, and if it is, go for it. I bet the peple high up on Aptera's waiting list are having a ball. $22k for an electric two seater that'll go 120 miles per charge isn't too shabby, and it based on their hiring it looks like they're gearing up for production.
