I thought we were supposed to have a stock market crash by now. Where is the doom?

Seriously though. Be cautious and wait for the pull-back before buying any more equities. There is always a correction lurking.

But this seems appropriate.

Thats probably a smart thing to do about now.

Or maybe not-----as long as interest rates are low there is no real alternative to the market.

+1

My dividend/MLP stocks have been paying a steady stream no matter what the market or oil does.

Back in 2007 the Atlantic ran a long piece by some "expert" about why the stock market would not crash but would go to 40,000.

I wonder what 40,000 evaluation then would be in inflation corrected terms for 2017.

Maybe that guy left finance and went on to be a political pundit betting on the 2016 Presidential race?

Well maybe you guys are right. For didn't someone say that the market can stay irrationally exuberant longer than someone can stay solvent

I believe that was the economist Keynes.

I will be watching the Snapchat stock start trading today. Stock symbol SNAP. This company has lost money every year and is now going public. I can't see any reason to buy it. Nothing fundamental underlies the company.

In 1999 I went from $ 100k in my portfolio up to $ 675K and then back down to $ 150k. It was a roller coaster that left me so fried in the brain I completely exited the stock market and never looked back. I won't go there again. Real estate investments in Canada, Thailand, Panama and the USA has been much more reliable and profitable. It's tangible, its a piece of land, you work it, increase its value and sell it.

As much as stocks makes up the fundamental building block of capitalism the way the market is manipulated by traders working algorithms makes me steer clear. There is something parasitic and messed up with it. Most small time investors are just pawns licking up a few scraps.

When we can no longer grow through spending borrowed money. "Money" being the avatar for fossil fuels, we are spending tomorrow's resources and planetary well-being today in exchange for a new kitchen bench top, plastic doo-dads from China and holidays to Fiji.

Austerity regime for the poor and bonanza for the wealthy, no contradiction there.
System is healthy and sustainable, nothing to see there, only fools would question the viability of such an economic scheme. After all walking to your mailbox to pick up a dividend check is hard work and should be compensated generously.
