Any chance we'll get them back? There were a lot of good thoughts in those posts...

Hooray for the MODS for getting the site up and back on line so fast.

Thanks.

Cheers!

Yes, it was a good effort with conventional computers. I was spoiled by my career in fault-tolerant computing. We used our own Tandem products, even for corporate E-Mail. Then when Compaq bought Tandem, we had to adjust to flakey Microsoft software and flakey Intel servers. It was a rude shock, discovering that regular computers ate your messages and your thoughts you had embedded in those messages. For years, between Christmas and New Year's day, I would sort through and archive all my mail to CDs. Mainly it involved deleting all the unimportant stuff and keeping everything that amounted to work product on the various design projects. These were retained for the mandated legal period then shredded. I kept my own stash of humor and personal postings, but I shredded those two years back, after discovering that Outlook and the various standard E-Mail apps would not read the CDs and display the threads.

I sent an enquiry to the site owner when I was able to log back in but have not heard back yet. When I know for certain I will let the user membership know.

If things were bad enough that they had to do a full restore from the offsite backups, I wouldn't hold my breath. I've seen enough SQL messages here over the years to be reasonably sure they're using relational databases, with logs, etc.

The effort to try and mix and match stuff to recover such data reliably would be prodigious, based on the last half of my career -- unless I'm somehow way off the mark in terms of the technology being used.

Shorty says he keeps a copy of every post he has made. So we could all make sure we didn't lose out on a single post he made. ;) I know this is weighing heavily on people's minds.

Obvious sarcasm, not out of character and not to be missed.

Shortonoil's posts are invaluable, given his wide-ranging academic and professional experience and understanding of our predicament. .

Now that is true sarcasm. Bravo

Heard back from the owner of our circus here. The hackers not only deleted the active posts, they destroyed the server operating system. We should all consider it good luck the attackers did the damage less than a week after the full backup was archived so we lost a few days instead of a week or more.

I still can't see the main page. What is the new IP address or the domain name?

Links to these are in the menu on the upper left side of every screen on this website.

Well, that's one way of being rescued from DOOM ;-)

T - "...so we lost a few days instead of a week or more." I don't think the Rockman posted anything during that period. So great news: nothing of real value was lost. LOL.
