PSantos,

Welcome.

I had been sitting here thinking, not for the first time, that I should visit the Douro region. This coincidence is startling.

Hello

Hello, my interest in peak oil just started recently when oil consumption increases while the oil prices collapsed.

When you find an easy to understand answer let me know. In the meantime, welcome.

f - "....when oil consumption increases while the oil prices collapsed". Would it be easier to understand if one rearranges your words: consumption increased when oil prices collapsed.

I’m sorry guys for the late reply, but it sounds like the site server configuration may be banning access from Portugal IP addresses and I only figured it out a couple days ago.

@SeaGypsy, thank you for the tip. Although I would prefer to start my career in Europe, I wouldn't mind moving to Australia. I did the search and it seems like the only way to get that VISA is to be the only skilled worker for the job role. And I’m pretty sure there are a lot of fresh graduates there looking for the same job as me =) and as for the companies is easier to hire locals than me.

@ROCKMAN, I would love to start my career in the North Sea. Have you been working there?

@Synapsid, just do it! I’m pretty sure that you would love the trip around the Douro region and the weather is perfect now for that kind of trip. Take a look on the official website for the tourism around the valley here. Also, the city was awarded the prize of European Best Destination 2014. For the official city tourism website visit this page (you have live customer service here). And if you want to explore the both sides of Porto’s city (the nicest and the unpleasant) check out this video. In general, Porto is very tourist friendly, and the locals are very helpful. They also understand English and as for the restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc they have English speaking staff so you won't find any communication problems. You can plan your flights using the SkyPicker.com to find the cheapest flights. If you have any further questions feel free to ask me :)

Being qualified is one thing, being able to cop a 4 year stint of extremely remote work sites & extremely harsh conditions for the base rate is another thing. Usually 14/12 hour days/ 7 off with a flight to the nearest capital. All expenses paid on site & commute, you are on your own steam on the off week. 6 weeks paid leave with 20% loading. Very repetitive work. Extreme OH&S requirements. Not many young Aussies can cop it.

PSantos - No...the only work I've done on your side of the Big Pond was offshore Africa. It seems obvious to me that a career in your neighborhood oil patch would be very unstable at a minimum. With any hard engineering degree it would seem like alt energy development could be a viable option. Working in the manufacturing theater could also be unstable given its dependence on affordable energy.

PSantos,

Thanks.

I've spent most of my life in a Mediterranean climate or on the edge (US West Coast, Black Sea coast of Turkey, Andalucia, Greece, Cyprus) and the north of Portugal has always appealed to me as a slightly cooler variant. Plus, I am a devotee of the house of Dow, and I love good food and friendly people. For me it is a question of when, I hope, not if.

Welcome fleance.

I feel moved to tell you that ROCKMAN is an oil geologist and he will tell you that they are all Greedy Lying Bastards. Don't believe anything he says, including that.

Did work on the Frigg Field , TCP2 gas compression platform , the North Sea province is not much those days , if anything they are letting people go .
My tip is , try to get in some job of the services companies , such as Schlumberger , they have work all over the globe
there is plenty of them , times are tough but you don't need one hundred jobs , you just need the one
working for a well known service company ,especially out in the field ,getting sweaty , count as kudos anywhere
If you are starting with a fresh face and a clean ironed shirt and tie , not so good

You don't see a bright future for the Aberdeen Section, do you? I've applied for Schlumberger and Halliburton a couple of weeks ago (so far no reply), after getting the sad news that Acona UK (a small company) was cancelling their graduate recruitment for the current year and KCA Deutag also cancelled theirs too. Right now, I share the same option as you, that a career in the North Sea would be very unstable for the coming years but I don't see any other way to get into the O&G industry.

Greetings,

Happy to be here. Have been peak-oil-aware for some time. Still getting used to the idea. Knowledge of peak oil/resources/population certainly helps to put events in perspective.
