Why isn't the increase accelerating year after year? Arent' we burning tons of more fossil fuels than 20 years ago?

Yes, we're burning more fossil fuel and yes the increase is accelerating year after year.

You can see this clearly in the following plot. Notice how the Keeling Curve steepens through time.....a steeper curve reflects more rapid accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere due to greater human CO2 emissions through time.

As is often noted, its complicated. While most scientists believe we are emitting CO2 at a much greater rate than 20 years ago and we have a bunch of items like China and India building hundreds of new coal fired generating plants we also have to opposite drive with a large number of North American coal burning plants switching to burning Natural Gas because in many markets it is cheaper than shipping in coal and paying for all the very intensive scrubbing needed to pull the fly ash, NOx and SOx radicals out of the effluent. Adding a set of natural gas burners that can be routed through the same fire tube boilers previously in use with a coal fire is not a difficult thing to do provided you have a large capacity natural gas main line feeding your power station. Under the administration of President Obama a large number of American coal burning plants that were quite old were outright scrapped and another large number were converted over to burn gas which has reduced US coal consumption by a good margin over say 2005 when Natural Gas was very expensive. In addition many countries in the EU have followed similar steps to reduce their coal consumption. Also the period from 2008-2018 in North America had a pretty sluggish industrial economy with a lot of factories and coal intensive industries like iron refining declining and/or moving over seas. Even the rapid increase in ICE vehicles for private owners in China is being partially offset by a sluggish American economy leading to people driving more fuel efficient vehicles or making fewer trips because of limited spending power.

That's true. I didn't calculate the yearly values carefully enough or I would have seen the increase in Tanada's numbers.

The IEA is predicting a 5% INCREASE in global CO2 emissions next year

Image

iea-predicts-5-percent-rise-in-global-co2-emissions

Looks like CO2 emissions are set to continue to increase under Biden, just as they did under Trump and Obama.

That means global warming will continue to increase as well.

Of course this is all OK according to the 2015 Paris Climate Accords, where Obama and other world leaders agreed to continue to INCREASE global CO2 emissions.

And a big thanks is also due to Joe Biden, since he was right there in Paris supporting Obama and the fraudulent and worthless Paris climate accords.

"IEA issues ‘dire warning’ on CO2 emissions as it predicts 5% rise"
https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202104/1221568.shtml

"Global CO2 emissions from energy are seen rising nearly 5 percent this year, suggesting the economic rebound from COVID-19 could be "anything but sustainable" for the climate, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said Tuesday.

The IEA's Global Energy Review 2021 predicted carbon dioxide emissions would rise to 33 billion tons this year, up 1.5 billion tons from 2020 levels in the largest single increase in more than a decade."

This is nothing remarkable, it usually happens around this date of the year. We are now higher than lat years peak so for the next couple months CO2 levels are in new since we invented farming levels in the atmosphere. Last time we were bumping 420 was during the Miocene Epoch.
