Can't Edit Posts

Unread postby PeakOiler » Sun 05 Jul 2009, 09:31:03

I can't edit my posts. I've cleared cookies, rebooted, tried both the aol browser and the Safari browser, re-logged in of course, but still get this:

and this:

The "Edit" button is not being seen.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I need to correct some typos in another post...
There’s a strange irony related to this subject [oil and gas extraction] that the better you do the job at exploiting this oil and gas, the sooner it is gone.

I have noticed that for a few minutes following the post you can still edit, but after those few minutes you are no longer allowed. I wonder if this is to keep a history of all outbursts and stupid comments to be used to later haunt the members, instead of allowing themselves time to cool off and remove the posts later?

You can imagine how frustrating it gets when members go back and destroy the content of threads making them much less effective as learning devices since the continuity has been destroyed.

Especially in light of Shannymara's abrupt departure, and the wide-spread difficulties caused by such a prolific long-time member deleting their posts, it seemed prudent to limit edits based on an expiration date.

Yea, I didn't quite understand why you let shanny delete every last one of her posts.

Of course this wouldn't really cover the mods, they have access to edit posts in case someone writes something inappropriate. If this were limited to time and a mod didn't catch a post full of pornography or something else, they would have to come to you for any moderation work.

That's right... of course staff can edit at anytime, so not a perfect solution.

Policy has been to allow self-deletion forever.

Probably not in the communities best interest.

I don't get why anyone would want to delete all their posts, but apparently so, so I understand why there are limitations.

However it may take more than a few minutes to edit posts. If I spot an error, I may not be able to edit it right away if I am busy.
It's already over, now it's just a matter of adjusting.

An excellent idea.

Fair enough... 1 hour then.

I understand your reasons Aaron, and I agree they are good reasons, but may I suggest 24 hours?

Sounds reasonable...

c'mon jason, don't push it. Sarcasm does not go well with the administrator...

Thanks Aaron. I'm also going to try and get in the habit of using MS Word first for my posts, so I can use the spelling and grammar checker. My spelling and grammar often needs to be checked.
So if a image hosting entity deletes a picture posted, say, over two years ago, would that require a moderator's help to repost an image?

James

Edit: Aaron, I owe you another lime...

We can upload to the server now. This way we can eat more bandwidth
